Aufgabe 5—1(0.5 / 1 / 1 / 2.5 / 0.5 Punkte)

Consider the following two situations: 1) A 1-dimensional box with length 2L, and the potential V is 0 within the box and goes to infinity at the walls. 2) The same box split in two 1-dimensional boxes, each with length L, by a central wall (at x=L), where V also goes to infinity.

(a) Give the energies of the 4 lowest lying eigenstates for all boxes, and draw their wavefunctions and energy levels in the three boxes.

(b) List the following wave functions in order of decreasing entropy, and calculate their entropy S.

(c) Calculate the energy expectation value for the three wave functions in (b). Does a high energy expectation value imply a high entropy?

Now we consider the system with the box split in 2 1-dimensional boxes, and assume that initially the left box contains a particle in the lowest state: |1L−lef ti , while at the same time the right box is empty. Now we perturb the system by removing the central wall, without changing the total energy of the system. After this change the system will maximize its entropy.

(d) Assume that the probabilitypnis zero for the eigenstates|n2Liwithn >3. Calculate what the probability is of finding the system in the eigenstates |n2Liwith n=1,2,3, after the system has maximized its entropy over these three states.

Hints: Use the normalization condition and energy conservation to express the probabilities ofp1, p2 andp3 as a function ofp3. Then maximize the entropy to find the value of p3 (and finally calculate S). Whereas the quantum system could not relax before removal of the central wall, the distribution calculated in (d) does not have to represent a thermal distribution and now the quantum system could relax further by donating energy to the radiation field (emission).

(d) Calculate the probabilities pn with n=1,2,3 (again assume pn = 0 for n > 3) for a thermal distribution over these levels, if kT = 32mLh2 2.

Berechnen Sie die Translationsenergie ER, die ein Wasserstoffatom nach der Emission eines Photons besitzt. Der optische ¨Ubergang finde zwischen dem Zustandn = 4 und dem Zustandn= 1 statt. Berechnen Sie unter Beachtung von ER die Energie des emittierten Photons und vergleichen Sie das Ergebnis mit der Energie des optischen ¨Ubergangs.
