Die Goldene Tafel aus Lüneburg. Forschungen zu Technik, Gestalt, Kontext und Bedeutung eines Retabels um 1400

Zum kostbarsten Besitz des Niedersächsischen Landesmuseums Hannover zählt ein Hauptwerk der Internationalen Gotik um 1400, die sog. Goldene Tafel, die einst als Hochaltarretabel der Benediktinerklosterkirche St. Michaelis zu Lüneburg diente. Die Forschung hat sich bis in jüngere Zeit fast ausschließlich auf ihre stilistische Verortung kapriziert. Weiterführende Fragen sind kaum gestellt worden. Das Kooperationsprojekt des Landesmuseums Hannover zielt darauf ab, dieses bedeutende Werk der Kunst um 1400 umfassend und interdisziplinär aus kunsthistorischer, historischer und

kunsttechnologischer Perspektive zu erforschen. Qualität und Komplexität des Retabels machen die Goldene Tafel zu einem exemplarischen Studienobjekt, an dem sich zentrale Probleme der spätmittelalterlichen Kunstproduktion diskutieren lassen.

Intensive worldwide research efforts are currently being dedicated to explore the potential of synthetic micro- and nanoscopic particles as drug delivery agents (DDAs) in the human vascular system. Most studies focus primarily on the biochemical interaction between a single DDA and a living cell. In contrast, the purpose of the professorship is to understand by means of computer simulations the physical multibody interactions between DDAs and the red blood cells which they encounter on their way from the injection needle through the cardiovascular system towards their target organ. The focus is on the possibility of an unintentional formation of clusters in which the DDA

concentration and thus their biochemical activity is much higher than expected, and which may therefore have severe consequences for the patient. Which mechanisms can create such clusters? To answer this question, it is necessary to investigate

simultaneously the microscopic trajectories of many DDAs, their hydrodynamic interactions and collisions with the highly deformable red blood cells, and the resulting macroscopic flow. Modern algorithms together with the power of present-day

supercomputers are now able to provide such a complete picture which is very difficult to obtain from an experiment.

Single-cell electrophysiology in humans: Perception, memory, and mechanisms of seizure generation

Until very recently, invasive microelectrode recordings were restricted to animal electrophysiology where they have produced an immensely rich body of insight into the basic mechanisms underlying cognitive brain function. Recent recordings of single neuron activity in humans, on the other hand, have yielded unprecedented findings related to higher cognitive functions that are found specifically in humans. One key finding was that neurons in the medial human temporal lobe explicitly encode

representations of our environment in the form of object categories and beyond this even abstract concepts like the identity of a person. These explicit representations of concrete and abstract semantic concepts, which are found in a brain region known to play a crucial role in the formation of declarative memories, offer a unique window to investigate the mechanisms of higher cognitive functions related to perception and memory. At the same time, these recordings, which are obtained in human epilepsy patients allow to monitor network dysfunctions leading to the emergence of the hypersynchronous activity that eventually evolves into the avalanche-like spread of excessive neural discharge activity known to cause the clinical manifestations of an epileptic seizure.

The professorship analyzes and reflects the globalization of law and economy from an interdisciplinary perspective. Economic globalization has fundamentally transformed the law: The regulatory state has been replaced by a complex interplay of public and private rule-makers on the national, supranational,and international level. This fundamental transformation goes to the core of traditional conceptions of private law, which build on contract and the corporation as key means of market coordination. The project highlights the law of transnational corporations and credit contracts as two paradigmatic fields for the contemporary transformation of private law. Research in the first area starts from the insight that cross-border transactions are increasingly integrated into transnational corporations in order to effectively coordinate economic processes across jurisdictions.

From a legal point of view, however, these transnational corporations are not considered as unified legal persons, but rather as a group of multiple companies, each incorporated under domestic law. The second focus lies on credit contracts, a field which is similarly situated between contractual and corporate governance. They shape large parts of the global economy, establishing network structures which are functionally almost equivalent to corporations.

Polyketide synthases (PKS) and fatty acid synthases (FAS) belong to the same protein family. Both are multistep enzymes, and both catalyze reactions by a similar working concept. However, as compared to FAS, PKS show variations in their functional spectrum, and their products, termed polyketides, are of more complex chemistry than fatty acids. Polyketides are produced by many microorganisms to mediate a growth advantage by being toxic to other (micro)organisms in the same habitat. This intrinsic

high bioactivity of polyketides has been used in medicine for decades to target acute and degenerative diseases. Erythromycin, epothilone or rapamycin are just a few of the currently used drugs. Our research interest is to study the catalytic potential of FAS and PKS, with the ultimate goal to train these proteins for synthesis of variants of the natural polyketides. This will establish protein-mediated biosynthesis of polyketides as a tool in modern chemistry, and complement classical synthetic chemical strategies. For realization, we work on improved methods for manipulation and expression of FAS and PKS, and on establishing and refining structure-function relationships for efficient reaction control.

NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) spectroscopy is one of the principal methods to study the structure, interactions, dynamics and function of proteins in atomic detail. The

professorship will be dedicated to computational-theoretical methods that extend the range of application of biomolecular NMR: Complete automation of NMR protein structure determination will enable the analysis of a large number of proteins. Structures of

proteins bound to membranes or larger than 30 kDa, which have virtually remained outside the scope of NMR structure determination, shall be solved by optimal stereo- array isotope labeling (SAIL), the use of non-traditional types of NMR data, and

computational methods. Structure-based resonance assignment will decisively accelerate NMR studies of ligand binding to proteins of known structure and strenghthen the role of NMR in drug discovery. Eventually, NMR protein structure analysis shall be brought to the workbench of non-specialized molecular biologists.

The professorship is at the crossroads of Slavic philology, Jewish/Yiddish studies, and art history, researches the cultural renaissance of Eastern European Jewry in the 19th and 20th centuries. The main goal is to analyze the cultural blossoming of Eastern European Jewry beyond national, canon-oriented literary and art historiography. The Kiev Kultur-

Lige, the leading movement in literature and painting, will be analyzed using current literary methodologies of the postcolonial, translational, and iconic turn. In its explicit interdisciplinary, intermedial, and transnational orientation the Professorship makes the largely unexplored and marginalized Jewish/Yiddish heritage of Eastern Europe accessible. It highlights the aesthetic and identity-creating potential which has been central to Slavic culture as well as to Europe. The goal is to create a scientific center in Germany for the renaissance of Eastern European Jewry. This center will serve as a beacon for the Central and East European cultural areas, as well as in the West European and US-American context. There, research in comparative cultures and literatures is currently being conducted but only at certain isolated institutions.

Dynamic Platelet Reprogramming, New Emerging Functions of Platelets Bewilligung: 08.02.2013 Laufzeit: 5 Jahre

The professorship will focus on one of the most important areas of medical research - cardiovascular disease, a major health issue in an ageing population. Moreover, there is emerging evidence that hemostasis has an important role in bacterial and viral host defense by linking immune-modulatory capacities with the primary cell involved in hemostasis, the platelet. The research addresses new emerging functions of platelets with emphasis placed on ?dynamic platelet reprogramming". This describes the process by which platelets change into a different phenotype or even into a differentially

functioning cell by regulation of their transcriptome and proteome. Recently it was found that platelets contain reverse transcriptase activity. Thus platelets can generate their own DNA, which is then potentially transcribed into new RNA species. This concept that cells lacking a nucleus can change their genetic repertoire is challenging current dogma. The possibility that platelets can generate DNA to change their phenotype and function in response to external cues opens a door to a completely new area of research. At the same time the concept has many clinically important implications.

Dynamic chemical defense reactions of algae: mechanisms and function (continuation)

The extraction/bioassay-approach of chemical ecology has resulted in the elucidation of severaldefense metabolites from algae but this approach does allow to unravel the entire metabolic potential of these organisms. Of special interest is the chemical defense and communication of unicellular algae in the dilute pelagic environment and its impact on the community structure in the open ocean. Combining the direct analysis of plankton

samples - thereby defining a metabolome of the entire phytoplankton community - with the development of ecological tools to monitor defensive reactions and population dynamics will allow to identify new ecosystem-shaping roles of infochemicals in this environment. In addition, tools to monitor defensive genes will be used and directly applied in the field. The unprecedented induced and wound activated defense

mechanisms of macroalgae will be another central topic. Key questions are i) how can chemical defense be targeted efficiently in the plankton, ii) how does chemical defense and chemical communication influence plankton community structures, iii) how are chemical defense reactions in algae hormonally regulated, iv) what are the processes involved in wound sealing of siphonous macroalgae, and v) how can these mechanisms be exploited to develop new biopolymers?

The overall concept of the professorship is designed as an integrative approach to operate at the highly dynamic interface of basic cancer research in the laboratory and the clinical advancement of molecularly targeted therapies for the treatment of cancer patients. Recent developments in cancer research and modern oncology have

dramatically shifted the skill set required by modern oncologists. However, the increasing need for physician scientists with specialist training in oncology is unmet and largely not reflected in the educational structures at the universities. The concept follows a three- pronged approach: 1) A translational research program that integrates innovative technologies, such as modern mouse genetics, biochemistry, cell biology and genome- wide expression analyses, to develop innovative, genetically-informed therapies for cancer patients. 2) A teaching program that capitalizes on innovative structures at the University of Cologne and that is designed to educate a new generation of physician scientists and biologists that have the armamentarium to pursue a career in modern oncology, and 3) a sustained commitment to the rapid development of laboratory findings into clinical practice through fruitful collaborations with partners in industry.

Genomics of atrial fibrillation

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a supraventricular arrhythmia characterized by an uncoordinated atrial activation and contraction. It represents a major clinical, social and economical burden, and its importance is expected to increase even more in the near future. Over the last seven years, data have emerged to support a genetic contribution to AF. New

mutations and gene variants that may predispose to the development of familial AF and sporadic AF will be identified in two genome-wide association studies. For the first time, special ECG analysis methods will be applied for improved and more accurate

phenotyping, driven by the hypothesis that different ECG phenotypes point to different underlying mechanisms. This work will be complemented by the exploration of the genetic contribution to novel ECG phenotypes, such as early repolarization syndrome and baseline or drug-induced right precordial ST segment/J point elevation. Furthermore, the hypothesis that gene variants modulate the outcome of therapeutic strategies in AF, i.e. response to catheter ablation will be investigated, thereby rendering an important contribution to individualized medicine.

Precision Measurement of the W Boson Mass at the LHC Bewilligung: 27.02.2012 Laufzeit: 5 Jahre

Modern particle physics encounters a fundamental problem. Over the past decades particles have been described that compose the Universe and their interactions in increasing detail. Nevertheless, there is still a big gap to fill before the whole story can be told. It is not yet understood how elementary particles acquire their mass, or in other words, what is the role of the famous Higgs Boson. The precision measurements of the mass of three fundamental particles, namely the W boson, the top quark and, if the discovery is confirmed, the Higgs boson, will give a definite answer. Therefore, the primary goal of the professorship is to establish a dedicated research activity, focusing on precision measurements of electroweak gauge bosons at high-energy particle colliders.

Special focus in the first years is placed on the determination of the W Boson mass, aiming at a relative precision of 0.01% and superseding the current best measurements by several factors. The measurement will be based on the analysis of more than ten billion recorded proton-proton collisions at the world's largest particle accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider. This requires innovative approaches in large-scale data-analyses, newly developed techniques to constrain theoretical and experimental uncertainties and also the development of new detector components.

All information about the visual world is transmitted by populations of ganglion cells, the output neurons of the retina, along the optic nerve to the brain. However, the

understanding of how visual information is represented in the population responses of the ganglion cells and the circuits of interneurons that underlie these responses is limited.

Vision is the dominant sensory modality for humans. Therefore, studying higher visual functions, restoring vision for the blind and developing artificial visual systems are major research fields. The aim of the project is to understand how visual signals are transmitted by the population activity of all distinct ganglion cell types from the retina to the brain. (1) The most advanced large scale multi-electrode array techniques will be used to record the activity from nearly all ganglion cells in a region of the mouse retina. (2) Using novel genetic-pharmacological methods, the activity of specific types of interneurons will be manipulated to determine how the response properties of different ganglion cell types are shaped by the retinal circuit. (3) The relationship between neural codes and behavior will be studied by combining novel automated measurements of behavioral sensitivity in vivo, recordings of identified ganglion cell types in vitro, and computational models.

The aim is to study the physical and chemical properties of individual adsorbates and molecular-scale adsorbate structures on insulating films on the atomic length-scale. The central technique is low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), which in the past has been used to study metal and semiconducting surfaces with great success.

Similar studies on insulating surfaces are very promising, and, most importantly, many physical and chemical properties are not only quantitatively but also qualitatively different on an insulating surface from those on a (semi-)conducting surface. Therefore it is of key importance for the emerging atomic-scale science and technology to include also

insulating materials in their investigations. New experimental possibilities include (meta-)stable charging processes of individual adsorbates and STM-induced single- molecule chemistry on insulators. In addtion, the study will open up new research

avenues in the field of molecular electronics because it combines the following elements:

the electronical decoupling of an adsorbate provided by the insulator and the ability of STM to analyze the structural environment of an adsorbed molecule on the atomic length-scale and to probe the electronic porperties of this individual, well-characterized structure.

Algebraic analysis of lattice models and its application to quantum field theory and condensed matter theory (continuation)

The research activites will mainly focus on the development of new algebraic and analytic methods for many-particle quantum systems. Apart from the problem of unifying the known forces in nature, the quantum mechanical many-body problem still is nowadays biggest challenge in theoretical physics. One of the main objectives is to deepen the understanding of the critical phenomena. This demands essentially non-perturbative methods. One possibility is the numerical study of the lattice models like lattice gauge theories. It usually requires huge computer capacities and sometimes months of continuous computations. The direct analytical study of concrete models close to criticality is extremely hard. However, one believes that the behaviour of the system in a vicinity of the critical point is universal and determined by several numbers called critical exponents. The common belief is that there always exists at least one integrable model in the same universality class with a real system which has the same critical exponents and therefore provides a good approximation of the real system near the critical point. For this reason the critical phenomena are to be studied through the investigation of integrable lattice and field-theoretical models.

Stifterverband getragen. Die VolkswagenStiftung engagiert sich in diesem Bündnis durch die Unterstützung eines Begleitforschungsprojekts,in dem das "Lehre hoch n

Jahresprogramm", das sich an Führungskräfte aus Wissenschaft und akademischem Management richtet, begleitend evaluiert wird. In den Blick genommen werden hierbei sowohl das von der VolkswagenStiftung geförderte Pilotprojekt als auch das neue Jahresprogramm 2012/2013. Durch das Begleitforschungsprojekt sollen verschiedene Dimensionen beleuchtet und dabei u.a.folgenden Fragen nachgegangen werden: Auf welches Profil hin sollen die geförderten Personen entwickelt werden, wie wirkt das Jahresprogramm auf die Gestaltungsmöglichkeit der Teilnehmenden an den

Heimatinstitutionen und welche konkreten Verbesserungen konnten erzielt werden? Bei der Programmevaluation im engeren Sinn werden dann verschiedene

Evaluationdimensionen wie Zufriedenheit und Kompetenzerwerb der Teilnehmenden sowie Veränderungen im berufspraktischen Handeln erfasst.Die Ergebnisse des Projekts werden dazu dienen, zukünftige Angebote effektiver und zielgenauer auszugestalten.

Im Gegenteil zu der mengentheoretisch geprägten Sichtweise vieler oder sogar der meisten Mathematiker, entwickelt Wittgenstein in seinen "Bemerkungen über die Grundlagen der Mathematik" eine Position, die als nicht-extensional bezeichnet werden kann und bei der etwa im Falle des Übergangs von den natürlichen über die rationalen zu den reellen Zahlen weniger eine jeweilige Erweiterung des Zahlbereichs als vielmehr

Wittgensteins Sichtweise lässt sich nicht den gängigen Ismen in der Philosophie der Mathematik, wie Logizismus, Intuitionismus oder Formalismus, zuordnen, sondern hat einen ganz eigenen Charakter. Durch sein sensibles Achten auf die Eigenheiten der tatsächlichen

mathematischen Praxis führt sie nicht nur zu Einsichten, die philosophisch wertvoll sind, sondern auch für Mathematiker von Interesse sein sollten. Ziel des Vorhabens ist es, diese Sichtweise so deutlich wie möglich herauszuarbeiten anhand einer akribischen, kritischen und konstruktiven Kommentierung.

Obwohl Lügen ein ganz alltägliches Phänomen ist und eine klare sprachliche Basis hat, gibt es einen Mangel an genuin linguistischen Analysen des Lügens. Das wesentliche Ziel dieses "Opus magnum" ist es, das Lügen als einen Sprechakt der unaufrichtigen Assertion zu betrachten. Beim Lügen repräsentiert der Sprecher die Wahrheit auf eine falsche Weise mit der Absicht, den Hörer zu täuschen. Definitionen wie diese sind durchaus gebräuchlich, aber welchen Status sie in Bezug auf die Semantik/Pragmatik- Schnittstelle und damit für die aktuelle Debatte zwischen Minimalismus und

Kontextualismus haben, ist bisher nicht im Detail gezeigt worden. Dabei soll auch untersucht werden, ob die Möglichkeit des Lügens bereits in das Sprachsystem

eingebaut ist, wodurch es dem Sprecher möglich wird, Wahrheit seinen Intentionen und Zielen gemäß zu manipulieren.
