Carotene Isomerase, Genesll0033, all-ELycopene The function of genesll0033fromSynechocystis6803 which is homologous to the bacterialcrtI-type phytoene desaturase genes was elucidated as a novel carotene iso- merase.Escherichia colitransformed with all genes nec- essary for the formation ofζ-carotene and expressing a ζ-carotene desaturase synthesized the positional isomer prolycopene (7,9,7⬘,9⬘Zlycopene) which cannot be cy- clized in the subsequent reactions to a- andβ-carotene.

Upon cotransformation with sll0033, the formation of all-Elycopene is mediated instead.
