ANTONIO ZANTANI and ENEA VICO, Omnium Caesarum verissimae imagines ex antiquis numismatis desumptae. Addita per brevi cuiusque vitae descriptione, ac diligenti eorum quae reperiri potuerunt numismatum, aversae partis delineatione. Libri primi. Editio altera. Aeneas Vicus Parm. F. MDLIII (1553, Boston Public Library; reprint 1554, München, Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Res/4 Num. ant. 203)
In this ‘Addendum’ (Nachtrag) are found reproductions of all the pages of the second index of Enea Vico’s Omnium Caesarum verissimae Imagines (1553; reprint 1554). This extensive index is entitled “Numismatum et rerum omnium memorabilium, quae in hoc libro sculptae visuntur Aeneae Vici Parmensis Index.” Vico’s index gives for the first time a fairly compehensive verbal registration (Erfassung) of the universe of imagery of the coin reverses of the Roman emperors. This census in words complements the visual iconographical documentation of the reverses of Roman imperial coinage provided in Vico’s plates, and it permits the images of the reverses (things, persons, allegories and events) to be seached with thematic keywords. The index also represents Vico’s earliest published interpretations (Deutungen) of the reverses of Roman coinage.
