Silk Heritage and Digital Technologies (30 Nov-4 Dec 20)

online, Nov 30–Dec 4, 2020 Deadline: Nov 5, 2020 Jorge Sebastián, Valencia

Weaving Europe. Silk Heritage and Digital Technologies Introduction

From flags to canopies, tapestries, furniture, bride clothing, traditional attire, etc., silk is found in countless historical contexts. Besides, it is also a multifaceted living heritage, beyond the textiles themselves, involving designers, weavers, engineers, painters, and merchants, among many others. Although the Silk Road is often associated with its Asian origins, its European ramifica- tions were fundamental for the construction of today’s world.

This commercial and cultural connection extended throughout several centuries, allowing the exchange of goods and techniques, but also of ideas, religions, fashions, and arts at large. Such a space for exchange influenced the development of peoples and cities along its routes, leaving traces and influences in each of them, building a common and shared history. European silk heri- tage is linked to history, sociology, technology, and the arts.
