Edited by Paulo A.L.D. Nunes, Global Coordinator and Manager, Ecosystem Services Economics Unit, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Kenya, Lisa Emelia Svensson, Centre for Business in Society, School of Business, Economics and Law, Gothenburg University, Sweden and Anil Markandya, Ikerbasque Professor, Basque Centre for Climate Change, Spain and Honorary Professor, University of Bath, UK

The trans-disciplinary thematic areas of oceans management and policy require stocktaking of the state of knowledge on ecosystem services being derived from coastal and marine areas. Recently adopted Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) especially Goals 14 and 15

explicitly focus on this. This Handbook brings together a carefully chosen set of world-class contributions from ecology, economics, and other development science and attempts to provide policy relevant scientific information on ecosystem services from marine and coastal ecosystems, nuances of economic valuation, relevant legal and sociological response policies for effective management of marine areas for enhanced human well being. The contributors focus on the possible nexus of science-society and science-policy with the objective of informing on decision makers of the governmental agencies, business and industry and civil society in general with respect to sustainable management of Oceans.

‘This Handbook is a valuable instrument for science-based decision making – either by corporate, public or third sector organizations – on a growingly strategic field: sustainable management and conservation of oceans. We should be grateful to all 101 contributors to this important book and make use of its lessons to successfully implement the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.’

– Teresa Patrício Gouveia, Trustee, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation

‘This important new book reveals the complex issues facing the planet’s oceans, a vital global commons. The detailed description of practical policy tools and innovative solutions should be recommended reading for anyone working on the health and sustainable management of the marine environment’

– Naoko Ishii, CEO and Chairperson, Global Environment Facility United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)
