Chloe Julius

This conference will look at the relationship between literature and art, specifically visual artists who incorporate literary sources into their work. We are interested in how these interventions put pressure on the practice of art history, and how they provoke a reconsideration of methodologies of visual analysis. Thinking with, for example, the art of Elaine Reichek and Nancy Spero, we would also like to consider the place of citational practices within the broader context of postmod- ernism. However, these names should just serve as prompts to a broader field of enquiry that is by no means confined to postmodernism or American art.

In taking up this methodological problem, we hope to move closer to resolving the following ques- tions: what happens to a work of art when literature is cited? How seriously do we take literature’s presence within this work? How do we write about it? Is interdisciplinarity our only model for analy- sis or is there another approach? Our ambition for this conference is to cultivate a dialogue with researchers for whom these questions might resonate.

Hosted by UCL’s Centre for the Study of Contemporary Art, the conference will be held virtually on 6 June 2021, and we invite proposals for papers lasting 20 minutes.

Please submit abstracts (200 words) and a short bio, to chloe.julius.18@ucl.ac.uk and michael.- green.16@ucl.ac.uk by Monday 8 March.
