04.30 Discussion 04.50 End of conference 05.00 Museum closes

This conference aims to foster discussion on one of the less-studied aspects of the production and consumption of portraits of the high and mighty : that of the sculpted portrait. European court life, from the Renaissance to the 19th century, has given many sculptors the opportunity to model and/or to carve the likenesses of the powerful.

The conference will, through papers and discussions, consider the following questions and issues : Sculptors and patronage from rulers The commissioning process : intentions and expectations The sittings : the designing of the

portrait Comparing and contrasting the making of portraits of royal and non-royal sitters The materials involved : practice, cost and relative status The display and setting of portraits What sculpted portraiture could do for a ruler Royal portrait types : busts, portraits on tomb monuments, equestrian monuments, etc. Comparing and contrasting the sculpted portrait with the painted or printed alternative Political structures and the

comsumption of portrait sculpture The sculpted portrait as diplomatic object The ruler's portrait and the sculptor's reputation The reception of rulers' portraits within court circles Later collecting and appreciation of royal portrait sculpture

This international conference is organised by Jeremy Warren for The Wallace Collection and by Dr Charles Avery and Léon Lock for The Low Countries Sculpture Society (LCS).
