PostDoc Fellowship, University of Johannesburg

University of Johannesburg, Johannesburg, South Africa Application deadline: Mar 19, 2021

Brenda Schmahmann, Rhodes University

Postdoctoral Research Fellowship with SARChI Chair in South African Art and Visual Culture I am seeking to appoint a postdoctoral research fellow to work with me for a period of between one and three years. The successful applicant will take up the fellowship as soon as possible, and certainly before the end of 2021.

Envisaged research fall broadly within at least one of the following three rubrics:

- Gender and Visual Culture;

- Public Art, Curation and the Politics of Art in the Public Domain;

- Art and Design in the Context of Community Projects.

In defining their envisaged work, candidates are encouraged to focus primarily on the writing of articles for refereed journals.

Applicants must have obtained their doctoral degrees within the last five years and be no older than 45 years at the start of appointment.

Fellows are paid an allowance of R 220 000 per annum and some further financial support is pro- vided for conference attendance, conference costs and fieldwork. As the fellowship is principally to enable a PDRF to focus on research, the fellowship holder may not hold full-time salaried employment concurrently with tenure of fellowship, but he/she will be allowed to undertake a few hours per week of additional work. While allowance is obviously made for the impact of COVID on mobility, candidates will be expected to relocate to Johannesburg as soon as this is feasible.

Research productivity and capacity is the primary criterion that will be considered.

If you are interested in and eligible for this position, please contact Brenda Schmahmann at bren- das@uj.ac.za for an application form. Applications must reach me by Friday 19 March.
