Bread Continued~

ON NUTRITION LABEL

Serving Size

Most bread packages list serving size as one slice, but we typically consume two slices at a time. If you’re having a PB&J for lunch, you’ll need to double what’s on the label to see the amount of calories, fats and carbs you’re consuming.

Fiber & Total Carbohydrates—”The simplest way to spot a good bread is to look at total carbohydrates and fiber,”

says L.A.-based nutritionist Ilana Muhlstein. “You want to have at least 1 gram of fiber per 10 grams of total carbs.”

Azodicarbonamide—Many breads include multisyllable ingredients like azodicarbonamide (ADA), a dough

conditioner that some fast-food chains have removed from their breads over health concerns.

High-Fructose Corn Syrup—Yeast needs sugar to create the carbon dioxide that makes the bread rise. But there’s one sweetener you should avoid: High-fructose corn syrup (HFCS). Studies have linked it to diabetes, fatty liver, high blood pressure and obesity.

—11 things to know about the loaf of bread!

Here is the break bread down into simple terms.

ON THE BREAD PACKAGE

Wheat Bread

”Wheat” doesn’t mean it’s a whole-grain bread. Look for the words “100% whole wheat” or “100%

whole grain.”

Multigrain

”Multigrain” (or “7-grain,” “12-grain” and the like) also could just mean different kinds of refined grains.

And as for “natural” and “artisan” - they’re imprecise.

Gluten-Free—If you are not sensitive to gluten, there may not be any health benefit to switching to these breads, which can be expensive and less nutritious, and come in smaller loaves.

Made with Ancient Grains

This refers to such whole grains as millet, amaranth, teff, kamut and spelt. Breads made with these grains may be healthier, or they may be mixed with less-healthy refined flours. Check the

ingredients label.

Diet—Reduced-calorie bread often means fewer nutrients and more fillers like cellulose. Avoid “diet” labels and simply choose a bread under 80 calories and with at least 2 grams of fiber per slice.

BY THE SLICE

Color—Low-nutrition breads are sometimes dyed brown to look healthy, while some white breads may contain healthier whole-grain flours. Read the label to determine nutritional value.

Extra Tip

Many of the healthiest breads in a grocery store are kept in the freezer section. There you’ll find whole-grain sprouted breads that are made without preservatives and so more likely to spoil quickly. Freeze them when you get home.

Accounts Requiring Passwords

Here are some password-management tips you might want to follow:

Ÿ Don’t log in with Facebook or Google—

Increasingly, websites are offering the option of logging in via other accounts. The option to click Continue with Facebook may seem easy, but it’s not necessarily secure, according to a study published by Princeton University’s Center for Information

Technology Policy. A security breach to one of those services could put your other accounts at risk. There is another practical concern: If you delete Facebook later on, you may find yourself locked out of apps you forgot were linked to that login.

Ÿ Abide by the golden rule: a different password for every account. “Your biggest risk is password reuse,”

says Kimber Dowsett, director of security engineering at Truss, a software infrastructure firm. “That’s where we see the highest numbers of compromised

accounts. They tend to come from a password that was reused somewhere else.”

Ÿ Upgrade weak passwords. What was considered a secure password a few years ago no longer holds.

Joy Howard, chief marketing officer of Dashline, says that any password you can easily remember is probably not strong enough. Randomly generated passwords are the new standard to keep ahead of tools that hackers use. You can type out a random set of letters, numbers and symbols, or you can have a password manager generate them.

Ÿ Reset as needed. When you just can’t remember or access a password, have no guilt about clicking on the Forgot Password link and going through the rest process. “You can do this as often as you want, as long as your email password is super strong and secured correctly,” says Rob Shavell, cofounder of privacy and security company Abine.

Ÿ Designate an emergency contact. If something happens to you, you don’t want your loved ones scrambling to get control of your accounts. Password managers usually allow you to designate secure access to others. Or, Dowsett says, make sure someone knows where you keep your password book.

3 Ways to Manage Passwords

Web Browsers– Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox &

Apple’s Safari often have built-in password managers. Wen accessing a password-protected website, you’ll usually see a box pop up, asking if you want to store that password. Click on yes; these are typically secure. Says Bruce Schneier, a fellow at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University and the author of books on tech security: “We in the industry are just trying to do the best thing for people who are not computer ninjas.” Just be advised that this works only if you do all your online activity on one browser. If you sign in to your browser, you can sync stored passwords across multiple devices.

Password Managers—These generate strong passwords for all of your online accounts and store them in an encrypted “vault” that you

access by logging in via one robust password. Then, every time you return to a password-protected site, the service will automatically enter the password it created for you.

Popular brands include Keeper, LastPass, McAfee True Key, Zoho Vault and Dashlane. Most offer a free basic version, but getting one that works on multiple devices will likely cost extra.

A Handwritten List—If you just don’t want to use a high- tech solution for password management,

try the lowest-tech approach instead.

Hand-written password-manager book that is kept locked safely somewhere

(Maybe use a firesafe box for security). BUT never store passwords in a computer document on your computer, someone could hack your computer and have access to your whole life!

7 Tips For Making Nutritious Smoothies

Smoothies can be a quick & delicious way to add fruits, vegetables, &

protein to your daily diet. The downside is that smoothies can also be high in sugar, calories & carbs. Full-fat yogurt, ice cream, & sugar-laden fruit juices are just a few of the ingredients that can make these tasty treats a lot less healthy. With careful planning, however, you can make smoothies at home that taste delicious while still being good for you. Here are a few tips for doing so.

1. Freeze fresh fruit: Instead of relying on packaged smoothies or bags of frozen fruit that may contain added sugar, slice & freeze fresh fruit. Create combinations that you store in a freezer bag you can pull out & throw in the blender. Berries, bananas, pineapple, blueberries, grapes, peaches, & mangos are a few fruits that taste great in smoothies.

2. Sweeten with care: Skip sweetened yogurt, store- bought fruit juices, and honey which can increase calories as well as sugar. Instead, opt for natural sweeteners like dates, avocados, agave, or pure maple syrup. Bananas in moderation can work too.

3. Don’t overlook veggies: You can also sneak some fresh veggies into your smoothies to enhance the nutrients without changing the taste. Spinach is a popular choice. As are beets, sweet potato, & carrots.

Experiment with a few combinations until you find one you like.

4. Pump up the protein: Seniors often struggle to eat an adequate amount of protein each day. Those who live with a chronic illness or who are recovering from surgery need more protein than they did in younger days. Adding protein to your smoothies is one way to do it. Greek yogurt, walnuts, almond butter, chia seeds, natural peanut butter, almond milk, & protein powder are a few ways to include this important nutrient in your diet.

5. Inflammation fighters: You can increase the benefits a smoothie provides by adding a few inflammation- fighting ingredients. Fresh ginger, whole flax seed,

Continued~ cinnamon, and cherries are all known to help.

6. Increase hydration: Adding a little extra hydration to your smoothie can help prevention dehydration, which seniors are at greater risk for than younger people.

Most fruit is naturally hydrating. You can also make ice cubes out of coconut water or throw a few cucumber slices into your blender.

7. Focus on fiber: Many of the ingredients listed above, such as berries, flax seed, walnuts, and spinach, all contain fiber. Making sure you incorporate some into your smoothie can help improve the

regularity of your digestive system, as well as aid in managing

cholesterol.

Consumer’s Shut Off Protection

Are you 65 yrs. or older and head of the household?

Call Consumers Energy 1.800.477.5050 so you can qualify for shut off protection, no late payment charges, and auto- matic eligibility for payment plans regardless of income.

Home heating help...Winter heating bills can have a major impact on household budgets. For people having trouble paying utility bills, it is extremely important to know that help with winter heating bills may be available. There are several energy assistance programs for eligible senior citizens and low income customers. Customers with heating bills, that they are unable to pay, should first contact their utility com- pany or energy supplier and explain their situation before receiving a shut-off notice.

Winter Protection Plan

While senior citizens, regardless of income, are protected from shut-offs during the heating season, the Winter Protec- tion Plan (WPP) protects both seniors and low-income cus- tomers of MPSC-regulated natural gas and electric compa- nies. Customers may find relief from electric or natural gas service shut-off and high utility payments between Novem- ber 1st and March 31.

Person qualify for the plan if they meet any of the following criteria:

i Are age 65 or older

i Receive Michigan Department of Health and Human Services cash or food assistance, or Medicaid

i Have a household income at or below 150% of the fed- eral poverty level guidelines

Eligible senior citizens participating in WPP are not required to make specific monthly payments during heating season.

The WPP allows eligible low-income customers ot make monthly payments equal to 7% of their estimated annual bill, November through March, and avoid shut-off during that time even if their bills are higher.

At the end of the protection period, both low-income &

senior citizens taking part in the plan must pay off any money owed in installments between April & Novem- ber.

To apply for this or other shut-off protection plans, contact your utility.

KISS—Keeping Independent Seniors Safe

A program for seniors 62 and older. The KISS program is a telephonic reassurance system that keeps seniors and their loved ones worry-free. Participants in

the KISS program can call the KISS office or receive a telephone call every Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. to make sure that the participant is alright. Special arrangements can be made for participants that need weekend coverage.

If the participant does not answer the phone,

the KISS coordinator checks to see if there is a problem and verifies that the participant’s telephone is in working order. If they are unable to reach the participant at this point, the KISS coordinator then calls the contact person provided by the participant for them to check on the participant to make sure they are alright. Contact people are usually neighbors, friends, or relatives, and all

participants in the KISS program are required to provide a contact person. If this fails, a phone call is made to the local law enforcement to do a wellness check.

Through the KISS program, if you or your loved one falls or has an emergency at home, they know that someone will be checking up on them to make sure that they are well once a day. This is a great program for seniors who live alone and are isolated from family and friends, but it is not required. Some couples enroll in the program in case something should happen to the caregiver. Valley Area Agency on Aging’s KISS program requires the participants to notify the KISS program when they will be away so that the KISS coordinator will not expect the participant to be at home.
