CALL FOR PAPERS
Association of Art Historians Annual Conference: 'Conception:Reception' University of Bristol, UK, 31/03/05 - 02/04/05.
Academic Session:
'Function, and its Relation to the Conception and Reception of Portraiture in the Eighteenth Century.'
Session Convenors:
Shearer West (University of Birmingham, UK) Caroline Stevens (University of Birmingham, UK) Session Abstract:
We invite papers for this session that explore the intended function or purpose, both public and private, of eighteenth-century portraiture, and which consider how function affects and creates connections between the conception, production and reception of the artwork. It is envisaged that in addition to attracting more traditional image-based studies, this session will also reflect the new and exciting work of scholars working with portraiture in the context of the burgeoning area of material culture studies.
Papers are welcomed that encompass both Western and non-Western art, and a variety of media, including but not limited to: painting, sculpture,
caricature, tomb and monumental portraiture, portrait miniatures and coins.
Papers should not exceed 30 minutes. Please send an abstract of paper to the session convenors by 31st October 2004, including the full title of your
paper, name, institutional affiliation (if any) and contact details to:
