Lot Nr. 36

Alexej von Jawlensky

Schätzwert:

EUR 120.000,- bis EUR 160.000,-

(18)

(Torschok 1864–1941 Wiesbaden)

Variation, Winter, 1915, No 54, monogrammed A. J., oil on linen structured paper, 36.2 x 27.2 cm, on cardboard, 44.7 x 33.7 cm, on the reverse signed, dated, inscribed A. Jawlensky, 1915, n. 54 (faded), Winter L (strikethrough) with orange colored pencil, lower right 316. Stamp Dr. Joseph Drexel Nürnberg Marienplatz 5, numbered 6 in orange approx. from Lisa Kümmel and no 316 in blue colored pencil from another hand, framed

After the outbreak of the First World War, Jawlensky, as a Russian citizen, was forced to flee Germany together with his family. Within a very short time, he had to leave behind his life and all his possessions. The family found refuge in Saint Prex on Lake Geneva. His life changed quite suddenly. From a turbulent, luxurious lifestyle, made possible for him by his patroness Marianne von Werefkin, he went quite suddenly into a politically enforced isolation.

The view out of his window, of a world that continued to turn without him, became a motif for the series of works that include Variation: Winter, 1915 No. 54. The changes in nature over the seasons, but also the change in Jawlensky’s state of mind over the course of his prolonged exile, are visible in the series of works. As time progresses, his expressionist style continues to develop. With the ‘Variations on a Land-scape Theme’, Jawlensky continued his artistic development and laid the groundwork for his later portraits, the ‘Abstract Heads’.

Variation: Winter, 1915 No. 54 is part of an important series in the painter’s oeuvre. Jawlensky made use of the exile and his social isolation to develop his artistic practice and created a new era in his work with what was available to him at the time. The imposed isolation and the view out of the window as the only experience of day- to-day life are strongly reminiscent of the current pandemic. Jawlensky survived this difficult time and found refuge in art.

The ‘Variations on a Landscape Theme’ are a testament to man’s perseverance, his ability to endure and to learn from prolonged difficulties. Variation: Winter, 1915 No. 54 is a sign of such a time and is an example of successful handling of a crisis – and is, moreover, a colourful, luminous, glimmer of hope.

“Initially, I wanted to continue working in St. Prex as I had done in Munich. But something inside me stopped me from painting the colourful, sensual pictures I had painted before. My soul had changed after so much suffering, and that meant I had to find other forms and colours to express myself. I began to paint what I called my

‘variations on a landscape theme’ that I saw from my window – few trees, a path and the sky.”

Alexej Jawlensky, Memoirs, 1937

Lot Nr. 38 -

Irma Stern

Schätzwert:

EUR 160.000,- bis EUR 180.000,-

(Schweizer-Reneke, South-Africa 1894–1966 Cape Town)

Floral Still Life, 1929, signed, dated Irma Stern 1929, oil on canvas, 58 x 44 cm, framed

“During the years I spent in Europe studying there was always one idea in my mind – back to Africa, the country of my birth, the land of sunshine, of radiant colours, where the fruit grows so plentifully and the flowers seem to reach the summit of all joy …”

Cape Argus, 3 April 1926. Irma Stern, »My Exotic Models«, in:

The Cape Argus, 3. April 1926

In her life, Irma Stern had to move between Europe and South Africa a few times due to the Boer War and the

(20)

First and Second World War. When she finally could reside in her marital home in Rosebank, The Firs, a large Victorian home in Cape Town which is now home to the Irma Stern Museum, in 1927, she started to paint a whole series of still lifes.

Although her earliest watercolors and drawings already depicted flowers, it was in this time, when she had finally moved back to South Africa, where she developed her own distinctive style. Through her flower paintings, she found her own artistic identity which was influenced by her friend Max Pechstein and the work of Paul Cézanne.

Stern’s popular still lifes all show the experimentation and her great joy with color. The usage of color and its balance on canvas is seen throughout her work. Flower paintings are a recurring subject in Stern’s oeuvre forming a bridge between her other two key subjects – portraits of those in her social milieu and paintings of ‘exotic’

others; Africans, Arabs, and Malays that she encountered both on her travels and at home. The innovation of her painterly practice with color and texture via her still lifes is a breaking point in her oeuvre.

Flowers are a major theme of Irma Stern’s life and work. The floral studies show her personal pleasure of those and her passionate interest in color. She mostly painted flowers out of her own extensive garden grouped with objects she Collected or her own handmade glazed earthenware jugs together with fruits and vegetables. While all her still lifes are unique, they share common characteristics in which they are set in a fairly shallow pictorial space with a forced perspective that tilts the horizontal plane towards the viewer. The addition of fruit, vegetables or her Collectables serve formally to balance the compositions, while at the same time setting up a sumptuous play of color. The celebration of floral and vegetal forms in her work gave free rein to Stern’s abundant creative passion for exoticism, sensuality and color.

As symbolic portraits of her personal world with the visceral pleasures of food and the exquisite beauty of nature, Irma Stern’s still lifes represent some of the artist’s greatest joys in life. Mona Berman, a daughter of some of the artist’s friends, remembers that after painting her still lifes at a considerable speed, Stern would devour the depicted fruits and vegetables as one of her favorite pastimes.

The work being auctioned off shows off Irma Stern’s expressive impasto technique and her joyous play with colors. The canvas is barely able to contain the artist’s exultation of the flowers depicted in it. The viewer is immediately drawn into the work wanting to take a smell at the flowers and fruits.

Lot Nr. 39

Conrad Felixmüller *

Schätzwert:

EUR 35.000,- bis EUR 50.000,-

(Dresden 1897–1977 Berlin)

Ma bonne l’onde, 1926, signed, dated C. Felixmüller 26, oil on canvas, 65.5 x 92 cm, framed

In this work, Felixmüller reflects back on his student days at the Dresden Academy, during which he intensively studied the nude. He has translated that in the present lot into a powerful and colour-intensive painting. Ma bonne l‘onde was created during a two-month study visit to Le Lavandou on the French Riviera. One can almost feel the summer heat, the head and upper body of the nude girl glowing in the midday sun on the beach against the green-blue background of the sea. The youthfulness of the nude model with her pointed facial features and oversized blue eyes as well as her long, flowing hair are strongly reminiscent of images of mermaids. The intense gaze, aimed directly at the viewer, is captivating, so that one cannot help but linger in front of the work and look at it more closely.

(Aschaffenburg 1880–1938 Frauenkirch near Davos)

Berghaus mit Gewitterwolke (Mountain house with storm cloud), 1917, signed and inscribed Handdruck E L Kirchner (faded), woodcut on strong vellum, image size 50 x 40 cm, sheet size 57.3 x 44.1 cm, framed

In 1915, Ernst Ludwig Kircher was drafted for military service in World War I. However, he would be declared unfit for war after a nervous and physical breakdown in the same year. In 1917, he retired to Davos, Switzerland, in a state of severe mental and physical exhaustion. Kirchner spent the summer and autumn of 1917 and 1918 on Stafelalp and in a mountain farmhouse near Frauenkirch in the vicinity of Davos.

The present woodcuts (lot 168 and lot 169) both originate from that creative phase in the Swiss Alps and

represent – both figuratively and thematically – that mountain world. Fascinated by nature and the simple life of farmers and their animals, Kirchner turned away from his previous focus on the big city and its inhabitants.

In the Swiss Alps, he preferred to depict the grandeur and majesty of the mountain landscape. His works reflect his knowledge of the place, his intense observation of nature and his close study of the people living there. He dealt intensively with the landscape around him. His early paintings, made in the Swiss Alps, are mainly close-up sections of the mountain landscape, mostly without including its inhabitants. On the other hand, his later works depict the life of farmers and their animals in the landscape. Kirchner left Switzerland only occasionally for trips to Germany until his death in 1938.

Hockendes und knieendes Mädchen, c. 1912, Lithograph on smooth, yellowish paper, signed Otto Mueller, image size 32.6 x 43.2 cm, sheet size 38 x 49.7 cm, Karsch 31,

Karsch only knows of one copy, but suspects 3 existing prints. The present example is thus the second that has become known. The overall effect of our copy is clearer than that illustrated by Karsch, which is printed with a lot of tone, especially in the sky and on the left edge. In contrast to this, the present example shows a light gray area over the back of the kneeling girl, which is not recognizable on the print illustrated by Karsch. From 1908 Otto Mueller used what he called an “old stone” for his lithographs, with a semi-circular edge chipping.
