Title: Marine Protected Areas Author: Saskia Serwotka

Quality Assessment: Lea Stanke Level: Secondary level II

Materials: Information text, instructions & atlas Time period: 90 min *

Aims: The students will get a broad overview of the current marine protected areas.

They also deal with the ecological significance, as well as the dangers of human utilization and learn about examples for positive marine management.

The 3 requirements are taught by the tasks: reproduction, reorganization, description and knowledge transfer based on the chart, own thoughts on selection of criteria for protection of marine areas (problem solving).

1. Introduction: Text reading (about 7-10 minutes)

2. Questions about the text and chart:

 Exercise 1.) Reproduction: Where are the marine protected areas? (about 10 – 15 min)

 The students can use an atlas to find out where these areas are. Depending on the teacher’s preferences or the electronic means available, the students can search for them with the help of the internet

 Exercise 2 a + b.) Description and knowledge transfer based on the chart, individual considerations of the selection criteria for marine protected areas (about 20 - 25 min)

3. Discussion

 role allocation, students put themselves in a certain role, notes (arguments, opinions, suggestions) (about 20 min)

4. Presentation:

 brief presentation of the discussion (about 5 - 7 min depending on the size of the group)

 the discussion, if the students refuse to perform in front of the class, can even take place (under the observation of the teacher) within the groups

* depending on suitability and the speed at which the class works, the last part (discussion and presentation) can be prepared and presented in another 45 min lesson
