Sensing Style: Today's Global Subcultures (online, 11 Dec 20)

online / Leiden University Centre for the Arts in Society (LUCAS), Dec 11, 2020 Registration deadline: Dec 10, 2020

www.sensingstyle.com Arthur Crucq, Leiden University Sensing Style: Today's Global Subcultures Online Symposium

Where do we find the subcultures that exist today?

Style and artistic expressions of subcultures are inseparably related to present-day social, cultural and political matters. They continually inspire and disrupt each other, changing the way we experi- ence culture, identity, and public space. The 21st century is highly globalized and has a decidedly influential youth, consequently understanding contemporary subcultures lends greater unders- tanding of more general cultural trends. The relationship between style and meaning as present in subcultures is the focus of the one-day symposium Sensing Style: Today’s Global Subcultures, organized by the Leiden University Centre for the Arts in Society (LUCAS) in collaboration with West Den Haag. Speakers from diverse scholarly fields and backgrounds will share their latest research projects and findings on style and emerging subcultures within the globalized, virialized and mediatized popular culture of this century.
