Tunisia: Council imposes assets freeze
The Council has adopted a decision and a regulation imposing the freezing of assets owned or controlled by persons deemed to be responsible for the misappropriation of state funds in Tunisia and persons associated with them.
The decision [OJ L 31, 5.2.2011, p. 40] and the regulation [OJ L 31, 5.2.2011, p. 1], which target a list of 48 persons, including former president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali and his wife, were published on 5 February 2011 in the EU Official Journal. The decision amends and updates decision 2011/72/CFSP, adopted on 31 January.
At its meeting on 31 January, the Council expressed solidarity and support for Tunisians in their efforts to put in place a stable democracy, the rule of law and democratic pluralism with full respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.
It welcomed the creation of a high commission for political reform and national
commissions to investigate the violence that took place during recent demonstrations and to investigate corruption.
