The lugworm

Features: The lugworm lives on the bottom of the Wadden Sea – hence its name.

It is about 10-20 cm long and up to 1 cm wide. The body of the lugworm is divided into three parts.

The first part is widened cylindrically. The second part has red, paired clusters of gills. The third and last part is smaller and without any additions.

The lugworm can produce a trunk from its mouth to eat the sand and gather all the nutrients contained in it.

The lugworm lives about 25 cm deep in the bottom of the Wadden Sea. You can recognize the tubes or burrows where they live by the unusual sand faeces at the top. These look like coils of sand. The tube is formed like a U and the lugworm lies at the bottom of the tube waiting for the dropping sand that it eats.

1. Task: Draw the lugworm in the box and name him or her. Look in the book and try to find a picture of the lugworm.
