Understanding and Working with the European Union
Content and aims
This interactive course of two half-days is for anybody who wants to know more about the EU and improve their influencing and negotiating skills. You will get a practical overview of how to understand and influence EU legislative processes. The course is designed for Austrian officials who need to understand, work with and influence EU decision makers, stakeholders and influencers more effectively. International EU lecturer Adam Steinhouse, former head of the School of European Studies at the UK National School of Government, will facilitate the course. The course includes engaging presentations and group activities.
On completion, you should understand:
• how policy is developed in the EU
• the role each EU institution plays in the legislative process
• the basic skills and approaches needed for successful negotiation in Brussels
• how Austrian officials can increase their influence in the EU and improve their chances of success
The course will enable any staff working on EU matters to do their jobs with greater confidence, effectiveness and efficiency.

Interactive presentation, simulation, group and pair-work, reflection
Technical requirements:
• PC / laptop / tablet / smartphone (possibly private) with camera and microphone as well as internet access, headphones are recommended
• Webinar software platform Zoom or similar

About the Trainer Adam Steinhouse
independent international lecturer, was Head of the School of European Studies at the UK National School of Government. Previously, he taught European and American Politics at the universities of Oxford, Cambridge and the LSE, and he was a commentator for the BBC and CNN on European and North American affairs. His book, Workers’ Participation in Post-
Liberation France, was published by Lexington Books. Born in Montreal, Adam graduated with a BA from Harvard University and a DPhil from the University of Oxford
