Report:

Gilles Le Marois and David Kolman resp. outlined the main lines of the NMP calls to be published in 2012, and of the overall Horizon 2020 perspective. Each participant presented a brief overview of the research activities of his group, with a focus on the most promising areas for CEA-FZJ collaboration.

The prospective discussions have been split in a few groups, each corresponding to an emerging area for collaboration, as summarized here below:

Spintronics:

CEA and FZJ have each very strong groups in this area. Regarding future opportunities for a reinforced collaboration:

 Call NMP 2013: No specific call for spintronics right now except may be NMP.2013.1.2-1 Nanotechnology-based sensors for environmental and health monitoring

Item to be considered

(2)

2/3

 Given their current research activities and background, participants agree to explore collaboration opportunities around the control of magnetization through innovative processes (electric field, …) and around lateral spin valves.

Agreed: Research meeting to be organized in Grenoble by Y. Samson

(with participation from CEA groups from Drs C. Barreteau (IRAMIS), M. Jamet (INAC/ Nanostructures and Magnetism) and B. Dieny (INAC/SPINTEC) and Jülich Pr Blügel, Brückel and Schneider). March- April 2012 as targeted period

To be explored:

- opportunity for FET project.

- specific topics for long term (FP8) lobbying of the calls

Biology:

FZJ,PGI-8 - Pr. Andreas Offenhäusser - has a strong experience on the development of biosensors based on electromagnetic detection or dielectric changes. The group has interest for 1) specific biological targets as antibodies, 2) a specific covalent chemistry to graft the biological targets on the sensor.

Using the antibodies developed in Saclay (iBiTec-S/SPI), and Bio-GraftFast™ chemistry in Saclay (IRAMIS,SPCSI), the two CEA teams can propose the needed biological materials and interface chemistry (to enhance the application fields and sensitivity of the Jülich biosensors).

Agreed: A forthcoming meeting in CEA Saclay with Pr Offenhäusser (and possibly other FZJ groups to explore future collaboration and specifically a joint project on call NMP.2013.1.2-1 “Nanotechnology- based sensors for environmental and health monitoring”.

To be done :

- explore opportunity to develop a sensor for fast and simple detection and identification of E. coli causing the hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). This biosensor should detect and identify simultaneously the bacteria and the toxin.

- Look for other partners, already cited: Pasteur Institute, RKI, clinician

In addition: contact to be established between LETI/DTBS (technologies for health – contact: Dr Claire Prummel) and FZJ team – to explore topics such as interaction living cells/electronics, detection and sensing and, possibly, activities more linked to clinical aspects. Action taken by C. Reita (CEA)

Photovoltaics:

Joint interest (Uwe Rau, Simon Perraud, Pascale Bayle-Guillemaud) for a common application to the currently considered new bullet on photovoltaics in NMP 2013 (likely published in July 2012)

Agreed: explore European project as drafted here below

Focused on inorganic materials (abundant, non toxic) for new types of PV absorbers - device oriented:

lab scale demonstrator at the end - scalability addressed - characterization at the nanoscale included Reasonable project in the 4 M€ range (given the call requirements) – may be 5 partners

To be done: S. Perraud + U. Rau are to provide a ½ page description, including impact to D. Kolman and G. Le Marois (before Wednesday 25th), to be pushed towards the Commission.

Characterization (TEM…): R. Dunin-Borkowski, P. Bayle-Guillemaud, N. Barrett No specific call (for research projects) opened in this area.

An ITN (Initial Training Network) would provide the much needed backbone to exchanges over methodologies between CEA and FZJ. The two partners have also sufficiently large research bases and competencies in these areas to apply jointly.

ITN submission to be considered at next available call (probably closing beginning of 2013 – latest information: the specific scheme allowing a joint application by two partners only has been

discontinued (and no information it could be revived in 2013. This implies introducing at least a third party, that could be an industrial).

Nanoelectronics:

CEA and FZJ intend to continue the existing collaboration in the field of nanoelectronics.

 The devices based on localised nanowires in Si, SiGe and III-V material are a promising subject for future project. These devices should aim at lower dissipation than conventional structures and could be, in some cases, also be used for more fundamental studies in nanoelectronics (see with Brison).

 Also of common interest is the application of SiGe, Ge and III-V materials to the co- integration of photonics function in silicon.

 More generally, the two partners will look for opportunities to propose projects on heterogeneous integration of new material and functions on Si and actively lobbying the commission (principally ICT but also NMP) for these subjects to be included in future calls.
