WELCOME!

Westfriesland Events Foundation

The Westfriesland Events Foundation welcomes you to IRONMAN 70.3 Westfriesland. It’s great that you’re taking on this challenge.

The Westfriesland Events Foundation was founded by the cooperating municipalities in Westfriesland, they are the initiators of the event and is supported by the Province of North Holland. The Foundation acts on the behalf of the Province of North Holland as the client for Extra Leisure, organiser of the event.

Our goal is that the IRONMAN-evenement is widely supported and experienced by the inhabitants and businesses in Westfriesland, it has a positive impact on the development of the grassroots sport in the region, it is good for the image of Westfriesland as an active sport- and event region, and the event gi- ves a positive boost to the economy in Westfriesland.

We are very pleased thatwe have been able to offer a full programme to the athletes and the people of Westfriesland

The fact that the event was created is mainly due to the great perseverance, the great efforts and the hard work of all involved in preparations and the organization. We would like to thank everyone who has done their bit to make this event possible.

Together with Extra Leisure, the cooperating municipalities of Westfriesland and the Province of North Holland, after, months of intensive preparation with many ups and downs, we lookforward to this spec- tacular sporting event in Westfriesland.

WELCOME!

The seven West-Friese Municipalities

00:00:06

Welcome to this special edition of IRONMAN 70.3 Westfriesland! The competition is bigger than last year, but also smaller. Bigger because we have increased the number of races and distances, including half distance triathlon. The course now runs through almost all Westfriese municipalities and also inclu- des Medemblik and Enkhuizen.

At the same time, the competition is smaller as a result of the corona measures. Unfortunately, it is not possible to receive participants from all over the world. Also, fewer spectators along the route can ap- plaud the athletes.

But with that, all the ingredients for a challenging sports competition are there! Together with the organization of IRONMAN, we implemented all the measures to make the race coronaproof. Of course with all the adjustments and measures needed to ensure the health and safety of participants, residents, volunteers and our employees.

Ironman and Westfriesland meet, and agree that if it can’t be done as we initially planned, just do it the way possible at this current moment. With the ability to literally change course when you have to. We will therefore remain flexible until the last minute to make the competition as responsible as possible for everyone.

This year it is still possible to run, swim and cycle through Westfriesland. Our environment lends itself perfectly to IRONMAN. You swim through Lake Markermeer, where merchant ships once commanded products. You will cycle through sunny landscapes and over windswept dikes where fruit and vegetables have been grown for ages. You will run on historic streets and quays with warehouses from the Golden Age.

Good luck and have fun during the competition! We hope you have a pleasant stay and see you again next years!

The 7 Municipalities in Westfriesland Hoorn, Stede Broec, Drechterland, Enkhuizen, Medemblik, Koggeland and Opmeer

CORONA MEASURES

IRONMAN 70.3 Westfriesland

The organization of IRONMAN 70.3 Westfriesland closely monitors and follows the guidelines of the government and the RIVM. Together with the security region and municipalities, we ensure a safe event.

We maintain close contact with all services and are happy to report that it now looks like the event will take place and perhaps even with few restrictive measures.

The measures known so far:

• The one and a half meter measure applies at all locations, except during sports practice.

• During the races it is not mandatory to obey the one and a half meter measure.

• However, there is plenty of space everywhere for athletes who need it. We ask every athlete respect the wishes of his or her fellow athletes

• Athletes are asked not to bring an audience. Public is not allowed in and around the start finish area.

• Passers-by and residents of the trail are asked to use the to respect and observe measures, including the one and a half meter measure. The organization monitors compliance with the measures along the course.

• In addition, you may be requested to wear a mouth mask when entering the starting area. The orga- nization provides this.

Because the rules change quickly and it is not yet clear which one is still in place during the race, we will send a separate message shortly before the event with all relevant corona measures that will be applied during the event.

HISTORY

Creation and development of IRONMAN

Back in the year 1978 Naval Officer John Collins was out for the night with some other Marines. A discus- sion arose between the group of men about the difficulty of three sporting events;

• Waikiki Swim which consisted of 3,8 kilometer,

• Around Oahu Bike Ride consisted of 180 kilometer,

• Honolulu marathon consisted of 42,195 kilometer.

The evening progressed and they kept disagreeing. They decided to find out which of these events would be the toughest, by doing them back to back themselves. The first person to finish had the ho- nour of calling himself the man of steel. With that, the first IRONMAN race took place. Twelve athletes reached the finish line. The winner was Gordon Haller.

Ironman Hawaii has 2,500 participants today. The world-famous long distance championship had a mass start until last year. Now athletes are divided into different (age) groups and start with time differences.

The following year 50 participants registered, however the race was postponed for one day and only 15 participants were at the start. The competition was initially organized in Honolulu. From 1981 the organi- zation moved to Kona, where the official World Triathlon Championship is still held today.

The IRONMAN triathlon became known worldwide in 1982. Julie Moss was in the lead for the entire race in the ladies, but got severely dehydrated and had to crawl to the finishline. Due to dehydration, she could no longer stand on her legs and decided to crawl in an attempt to reach the finish line. That was when she was overtaken by Kathleen McCartney just before the finish, hardly anyone knows, but the images of Julie Moss went all over the world and triathlon became a well-known sport.

The finishing sentence; “You are an IRONMAN” originated from the speaker of Kona Mike Reilly. In one of his first years as speaker, a friend of his participated. Out of respect, he spoke the words; You are an IRONMAN to his friend. The reactions of the audience and his friend was so overwhelming that Reilly decided to repeat it a number of times, with great success. From that moment on, the iconic image that athletes have at their finish line grew when they hear: “You are an IRONMAN”! and it has become a goal on its own for triathletes to hear these famous words at their finish at least once in their sporting career.

Moreover, the use of this scentence applies only to the full distance of the IRONMAN.

The first IRONMAN in Europe is that of Lanzarote, organized since 1992. Dutch victories there are of the athletes Ben van Zelst, Frank Heldoorn and Katinka Wiltenburg.

The first IRONMAN in the Netherlands took place in Maastricht. Bas Diederen and Yvonne van Vlerken took the victory there in 2015. The Dutch celebrated another victory in 2018 with Els Visser.

Since 2019, IRONMAN has been expanding its empire with so-called IRONMAN Multisport Festivals.

Westfriesland had the first in 2019 worldwide. A multisports festival consists of shorter and accessible distances such as the IRONMAN 4:18:4 (sprint triathlon) and the IRONMAN 5150 (Olympic distance). In 2020, the IRONMAN Westfriesland will be expanded with a 70.3.

Race briefing

The race briefing will not be held on site. You will receive an email with the digital race briefing in the week prior to the event.

Swim start

• Also bring your white bag (clean clothes for after the race) and hang it on the hook of the bag rack that corresponds to your start number, located in the BLACKROLL Recovery Finish Zone near the swim start.

• At the rolling start of the swim start, the athlete passes a timing mat. The time of athletes jumping over the fences will not be registered. The athletes must leave the swimming course via the official exit and walk over the time registration mat. Otherwise, the organization cannot verify that the ath- lete has exited the water and may be in distress.

• If for any reason you are unable to complete the swimming, you will have to report to an official.

• All athletes are required to use the swimming caps distributed by the organisation.

• Before the start you will be checked for wearing a swimming cap and timing chip (on the left ankle)..

• IRONMAN The Netherlands has set up a rolling swimming start for its events.

• Athletes place themselves according to their realistically estimated swimming time.

• Every 5 seconds, 3 athletes will start.

• After you pass the timing mat, your time starts. From that moment on, the cut off time applies. We would therefore like to ask you to stand in the start area with your estimated, realistic swimming time; in a faster course you will not gain any advantage and can mainly cause frustration for yourself and your fellow athletes.

• The results show your net time, the time that is started after passing the timing mat.

• Once all the individual participants have started, the relay teams start.

Cut-off time

The cut-off time is 01:10 after your start.

Start protocol swimming discipline

Make sure you are ready in the start box in a timely manner (15 minutes at the latest before the start).

When entering the starting box, you check whether you are wearing your swimcap, wristband and ti- ming chip (at your left ankle) correctly. If you do not wear the swimcap, timing chip and wristband, you may not start. For all distances there is a rolling start or, three participants start at the same time every five seconds. Get in the starting box with your expected end time. Follow the instructions of the organi- zation and volunteers. Keep the buoys on the swim course to your left at all times.

Additional information:

The organization may decide, depending on the watertemperature and/or weather conditions that a wetsuit is required or not allowed. . One hour before the competition, the water temperature is announ- ced and it can be decided to shorten or cancel the swimming part.

At the BLACKROLL Recovery Finish Zone there is a location for the white change bag, where you can store supplies for after the event. Before the start it is recommended to wear socks or (old) flip flops, which you can take off just before the start, this way you loose less heat. Everything that is left behind at the swim start is thrown away by the organization.

Just before the start you can also grab a cup of SOS Hydration. SOS Hydration has been developed to combat dehydration and increase overall human performance; ideal for during the race.

Bike All information for the Bike

Cut-off time

The cut-off time is 03:50 after leaving the Transition Zone.

Important information

During the race it is important that athletes adhere to the general traffic rules and use their common sense. Dangerous maneuvers and irresponsible cycling behavior can lead to disqualification. It is also important that athletes always keep to the right while cycling. Drafting (riding in the slipstream of ano- ther athlete) is not allowed and if you want to overtake the athlete infront of you, this maneuver must be completed within 25 seconds. Athletes must keep at least 12 metres distance between each other.

A penalty tent will be set up just before returning to the transition area. If you get a time penalty, a judge on the bike will clearly indicate this to you.

During the cycling part, two aid stations have been set up; at 28 and 57 km on the course.

It is forbidden to overtake at two places on the course because of the many bends and the narrow road section. Here are signs with “no passing”. As soon as overtaking is allowed again, you will see the “pas- sing allowed” sign. There will also be a summons in some places to reduce speed with “slow down” signs.

This is usually followed by a sharp bend or several bends.

All information for Relay Teams

Registration

Registration must be done by each team member, each team member must also submit a signed wai- ver (usually done at the moment of registration). Relay teams receive: 1 starting number and 1 timing chip (at bike check-in).. However, each team member receives an athlete’s bag (at registration) and a wristband. At the registration it will be checked whether each athlete has registered and whether a con- tact person is listed for in the case of an emergency.

Bike Check-In

Relay teams must check in their bike like individual athletes. However, relay team athletes don’t check in colored changebags because athletes don’t have to change. Athletes attach their helmet to the bike at check-in.

Transition Zone

Relay teams have their own location in the change zone marked with the sign ‘Team transition zone’.

See the map of the transition zone.

Timing chip and start number

The timing chip and start number are passed on in the team area in the tansition zone. The timing chip is passed from the swimmer to the cyclist. The cyclist already wears the starting number. Upon return, the cyclist hands the timing chip and the starting number to the runner. Relay participants can finish together! Please take other finishers into condsidiration. They too are entitled to a nice finish.

Swimmer

Before the race, the swimmer can bring a sports bag to the transition zone. The bag is delivered in the transition zone and is picked up after the swim in the relayteams’ area.

Cyclist

The cyclist takes the blue change bag with equipment. This can be taken to the transition zone before the start. This is hung on the bag rack at start number.

Runner

The runner gets a white change bag. This is taken to the transition zone before the start and the organi- zation takes it to the BLACKROLL Recovery Finish Zone.

Bike check out

The bike check-out can only be done with the start number, the wristband and the timing chip. The cyclist of the relay team takes care of the bike check-out and collects his bike.

A relay team consists of 2 or 3 athletes. The decision which team member swims, cycles and runs can be changed until the registration.

HOTSPOTS

The place to be

Hoorn

Hoorn is the centre of the IRONMAN 70.3 Westfriesland. Here you can find the start, finish and transiti- onzone. Especially at Hollandia football ground in the Julianapark in Hoorn will be an important location for the whole weekend. The transition zone is located on the football fields of Hollandia.

Both the start and finish zone are located on Baatland, a green peninsula. During IRONMAN 70.3 West- friesland, the athletes and enthusiasts will pass several beautiful places in Hoorn, such as the harbor, the Hoofdtoren, the Visserseiland and the Roode Steen. A sporting hotspot for participants, the public and residents of the West Friesland region.

Opmeer

A hot spot during the cycling trail is the bridge at the Wipbruglaan/Hogeweg. This is a small bend in the course and as a spectator you can see the athletes coming from far.

The aid station in Archwoud is highly recommended if you want to encourage your athlete. This spot is only accesible by walking and the road is blocked. The athletes reduces speed through the aid station and here you can see them grabbing food and drinks.

Medemblik

In Medemblik it is wonderful to see the cyclists. The bike trail goes straight through the centre and pas- ses the Pekelharinghaven and Westerhaven.

Radboud Castle is a real attraction of Medemblik. The castle is located between the IJsselmeer and Wes- terhaven and the athletes cycle around it. The castle also has a restaurant, an ideal moment for a break for spectators.

Enkhuizen

Another beautiful place is the Waterpoort Oude Gouwsboom in Enkhuizen. The cyclists go over the bridge and this is a beautiful place between the fields to encourage them. It is very narrow, so there is little space for spectators.

In Enkhuizen the athletes also cycle past the Koepoort, a city gate and part of the fortifications in the city.

Drechterland

Before the athletes cycle into Hoorn they still pass the big Windmill in Drechterland. The mill stands in the middle of the fields and gives beautiful pictures in combination with the surroundings. The athletes cycle on the dike with a beautiful view over the Markermeer.

WELCOME!

In the region of West-Friesland

West Friesland is less than 40 kilometres from Amsterdam. West Friesland is the area in North Holland that is completely enclosed by the oldest dike in the Netherlands; the Westfriese Omringdijk. This mira- cle of human hand is already 800 years old and connects the historic cities of Alkmaar, Hoorn, Enkhuizen and Medemblik. The Omringdijk winds through the landscape like a green route and leads visitors to Westfriesland along the wide landscape with its unique faces, the typical ribbon villages with stolp farm- houses and the former VOC cities with their beautifully preserved inner cities. A large part of the dike still forms the border between land and water, in other places the dike runs right through the land between polders, Wesfriese villages are monuments to centuries of struggle against the water. Experience what it’s like to stand on the dike with the higher water on one side and the lower land on the other.

The rich history of the prosperous VOC cities hoorn, Medemblik, Enkhuizen is still visible in the many mansions, canals, museums, churches, citywalls and ports.

Enkhuizen

Enkhuizen. A town surrounded by water on three sides. You can easily imagine yourself at the end of the world. And exaclty here which seems to be the end of the world, so many stories begin. From its origins in the Middle Ages as a fishing village to its heyday in the 17th century.

The famous Zuiderzee museum is located in Enkhuizen, but in the old town centre there is a diversity of shops, it seems like you are in an open-air museum.

The many restaurants, cafes and terraces are located in and around historic buildings where your eyes wonder past the beuatiful scenery. Sportsenthusiasts can walk, cycle, swim, climb and sail in and around Enkhuizen!

In the region of West-Friesland

Medemblik

Medemblik is the smallest and oldest city in Westfriesland. History tells of the fight against, but also of prosperity thanks to the water. The historic city centrum small-scale and yet equiped with everything you need. There are plenty of nice shops, run by enthusiastic shopkeepers. There are cozy cafés, restau- rants and bars. Each with its own ambience and menu, for everyone’s taste and budget.

Take a nice walk through the old town, in the park and along the harbours. The urban beah can be re- ached via the route past Radboud Castle. In the centre there are 3 museums and the Steam Train from Hoorn comes to stop at the picturesque station. In addition, there are bustling activities for every season, from markets to events on and around the water. In Medemblik city you will find everything within wal- king distance. When you come to Hoorn, one thing immediately stands out: the city is beautiful, atmospheric and versatile. The history of this mighty VOC city can still be found on every street corner. The warehouses, ports and distinguished houses, really exudes the prosperity of the seventeenth and eighteenth centu- ries, when Hoorn still maintained trade relations with Asia. But also the modern Hoorn is a feast for the eyes. From luxurious terraces, hip fashion shops to localmeetingplaces, it’s all present in this port city on Markermeer.
