Introduction to the space of marked groups.

Finite-dimensional approximations of finitely generated groups.

Goulnara Arzhantseva

We discuss various (still open) questions on approximation of infinite discrete groups. We focus on finite-dimensional approximations such as residual finiteness and soficity. We introduce and discuss the notion of an asymptotic approximation.

For each class, it contains a name that describes how a representative of that class can be constructed (from p-subgroups, quasisimple groups or smaller maximal finite matrix groups

Motivated by recent results on the minimal base of a permutation group, we introduce a new local invariant attached to arbitrary finite groups.. Building on results of Halasi–Maróti,

We introduce a topological notion of a sofic boundary attached to a given sofic approximation of a finitely generated group and use it to prove that coarse properties of

If all nonzero finite dimensional rational representations of G are semisimple, i.e., every subrepresentation has a G-stable linear complement, then the ring of invariants R G

We use von Neumann algebras to show that all invariant random positive definite functions on groups with infinite conjugacy classes which integrate to the regular character

The way we presented the Lie algebra sl 2 ( C ) is not convenient for our purpose to study the representation theory of this algebra (infinitely many elements), that’s why it is
