Overall objective of the project

The objective of the COMPETE project is to gain a comprehensive view of the different elements that contribute to the competitiveness of the European agri-food sector in order to provide better targeted and evidence-based policies at the EU as well as at the national level, and to promote the Knowl- edge Based Bio-Economy in Europe.

Expected results

The general structure consists of two parts. In the fi rst part a comprehensive description and analysis of the current situation is conducted.

Particular attention will be given to the determi- nants of competitiveness, how they have evolved over time and how they have shaped the position of companies and countries in selected EU agri- food chains. These fi ndings are used in the sec- ond part to discuss possible future developments and to deduce policy recommendations.

• Supporting the interaction between existing and developing initiatives related to the competitiveness of EU agri-food supply chains

• Report on the State-of-the-art regarding indicators and determinants of competitiveness

• Report on trade patterns of EU agri-food sectors in relation to their international competitiveness

• Report on the assessment of differences in competitiveness of EU agri-food supply chains within the EU

• Report on the role of the policy environment

• Report on the assessment of comparative advantage and productivity differences at the processing and the farm level

• Report on the role of transparency and market effi ciency

• Report on the role of governance in competitive agri-food supply chains

• Report on the role of innovation in competitive agri-food supply chains

• Recommendations for different stakeholders such as the industry, particularly SMEs, and policy makers
