Team Dallas (0-1) 19

June 1, 2017 • Durham, N.C.

DURHAM, N.C. – Geoff Oltmans, a four- year veteran of K Academy, looked to be in midseason form, netting a game-high eight points to go along with seven rebounds en route to a 29-19 Denver victory over Dallas.

K Academy veteran Dan Feldstein played an integral role in Denver’s offense early, opening the scoring for the away squad with a three-pointer from the top of the key, and later in the half, finding K Academy rookie, Kurtis Darden for a layup during a fastbreak.

Feldstein showed his ability to get to the basket in the first half as well, driving to his right before hitting a mid-range floater in the paint to extend Denver’s lead over Dallas, 7-2. Darden also displayed his scoring prowess, pulling up for a mid-range jumper on a Denver fastbreak in the first half, adding to his four first-half point total.

In addition to Feldstein and Darden, Oltmans added to Denver’s scoring efforts, connecting on three straight jumpers, including a buzzer beater to end the half.

Denver used a late run to head into the half with a 17-4 advantage.

Dallas responded in the second half. Todd Mesibov caught an inbound pass for an easy bucket and Michael Pagano hit a pair of jumpshots during the team’s 7-0 run. Darden ended the Dallas run by knocking down his second jumper of the game.

Don Yaeger helped extend Denver’s lead back to 13 points after connecting on a three, his first of this year’s K Academy and the 10th of his career. Dallas was able to cut into Denver’s lead thanks to a Randy Chen baseline jumper and a three-point play by Joel Andersen, but Robert Fernandez connected on his second corner three of the game to once again give Denver a double- digit lead. Denver would successfully hold on to the lead to earn its first victory of the year and the 21st of the team’s history.

Denver’s bench scored 12 of the team’s 29 points in the win.

June 1, 2017 • Durham, N.C.

DURHAM, N.C. – The 15th edition of K Academy started off in exciting fashion, as Minneapolis mounted a ferocious comeback to earn a 37-35 victory over Charlotte to kick off the new season.

Charlotte got out to an early lead on Minneapolis, thanks to a three by Todd Costa and a bucket by Bryan Palmer, giving the home squad a 5-0 advantage. Minneapolis’

Grant Gilliam ended the Charlotte run with a steal on the defensive end, followed by an uncontested layup. Gilliam’s presence was felt on the glass in the early going as well, as the New York, N.Y., native hauled in a first- half high six boards in the opening stanza.

Gilliam ended the contest with a game-high 11 rebounds.

With the score sitting at 7-3, and Charlotte leading midway through the first half, Nigel Fisher knocked down his first three of this year’s K Academy, pulling Minneapolis within one. Undeterred, Charlotte scored 10 consecutive points, giving the squad a 17-6 lead, its largest of the half. During Charlotte’s 10-0 run, Rob Green contributed a pair of free throws and hit a jumper to score four of his game-high 14 points in the contest. Minneapolis ended the run after a well executed inbounds play led to an easy layup for Stefan Weiler.

Stout defense, and looks from Rob Lawson that found Jeff Bytomski under the basket for a slew of high-percentage shots, allowed Minneapolis to work its way back into the contest, pulling the team within three points before the break. Bytomski played a critical role in Minneapolis’ comeback, accounting for all of the team’s final eight points in the closing minutes of the half.

Bytomski concluded the contest with 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting.

Minneapolis’ momentum from the first half carried over in the second, as the away team took its first lead of the game (22-21). The second half would remain a back-and-forth affair, with seven lead changes.

Ryan Webb connected on his first three of the game with just under eight minutes remaining, giving Minneapolis a 29-27 lead, which the away squad would not relinquish.

Team Indianapolis (1-0) 38

Team San Antonio (0-1) 34

June 1, 2017 • Durham, N.C.

DURHAM, N.C. – Indianapolis, backed by a stellar second-half effort by Ward Horton, opened the year with a victory for the second straight season after defeating San Antonio, 38-34. Indianapolis extended its all-time K Academy wins record to 38 with Thursday’s result.

Horton, following a one-year hiatus from K Academy, showed no signs of rust, scoring 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting, including nine second-half points for Indianapolis. Horton added nine rebounds, narrowly missing his first double-double of the year.

After Scott Lobel opened the scoring for Indianapolis with a layup, Horton knocked down his first of two three-pointers on Indianapolis’ next possession. The away team looked to be in control early, holding the lead through the opening stages of the contest over San Antonio. San Antonio took its first lead at the 3:09 mark, however, after a three-quarters court outlet pass from Ty Shay found Adam Thor at the other end of the floor for the easy bucket. A made free throw by Ben Levine would extend San Antonio’s lead to 14-12, but Indianapolis responded just before the half as Chris Brandt connected on the second of two free-throw attempts and Martin Brodbeck hit a close-range jumper following an assist from Scott Walker to give Indianapolis the 15-14 lead at the break.

Walker made his presence felt in the paint during the first half, blocking a pair of shots.

Walker is no stranger to strong defense, owning the K Academy single season blocks record of 24, earned during the 2010 campaign.

Both teams caught a stride in the second half, as Indianapolis shot 9-of-21 (.429) from the floor and San Antonio connected on 8-of- 22 (.364) attempts from the field. Indianapolis held the lead throughout the second half, never surrendering the lead.

San Antonio’s Hamill Jones III made a strong impression in his K Academy debut, scoring 11 points and adding nine rebounds to go along with three steals and two blocks.

Indianapolis’ Chris Brandt became the 25th member of the 20-point club after scoring 20 points in the contest.

Indianapolis was locked in on both ends of the floor to start the game, scoring on each of its first four possessions, while forcing Charlotte into back-to-back shot clock violations. Indianapolis spread the scoring around early, with Chris Brandt recording a pair of buckets, Scott Walker adding two points and Scott Lobel scoring two points of his own to start the game on a 9-0 run. Scott Ethridge was able to end the Indianapolis run after collecting an offensive rebound and finishing the put back for Charlotte.

Brandt led all scorers in the opening half with 10 points. The Baltimore, Md., native would go on to score 12 points, the second-most number of points among his teammates.

Indianapolis capitalized on a number of second-chance opportunities, converting 10 offensive rebounds into 11 second-chance points.

Indianapolis continued to play well in the second half. In additiion to netting two points, his second bucket of this year’s K Academy, he also posted his third career block.

Charlotte’s duo of Bryan Palma and Scott Ethridge put in valiant efforts in the contest, as each posted seven rebounds.

Team Seattle (1-0) 32

June 1, 2017 • Durham, N.C.

DURHAM, N.C. – Seattle used a stellar second-half showing by Peter Micelli to help propel the home squad to a 32-25 victory over Tampa, rounding out the opening session of K Academy XV. Micelli concluded the game with a double-double, netting 18 points and 19 rebounds, both game-highs.

Micelli’s 19 rebounds tie his K Academy single game record, which he registered June 2, 2016. Micelli also narrowly missed scoring 20 points for the second time in his K Academy career.

Both Tampa and Seattle showed shut- down defense from the game’s outset, with neither team allowing a bucket through the first 2:39. David Goldsmith opened the scoring for Tampa knocking down a mid- range jumper in the lane. Zeb Pirzada got Seattle on the board, hitting a three off the bench. Philip Geraffo assisted on the three.

Pirzada continued to be a spark off the bench for Seattle, driving to the basket on the team’s next possession to bring the home team within one. Micelli gave Seattle its first lead of the game after finishing a layup in traffic. Tampa responded by going on a 5-2 run to tie the game at 11-11 at the half.

Seattle’s Pirzada led all scorers halfway through the contest with five points on 2-of-3 shooting, while Matthew Koch’s five boards paced the rebounding efforts of Tampa. Four different Seattle players recorded a steal in the first half - Abed Abusaleh, David Mosse, Rob Poppiti and Micelli.

Seattle turned to Micelli in the second half, as the centerpiece of the team’s offense scored 15 points following the break. The Beverly Hills, Calif., native scored both from the field and from the free-throw line, connecting on 4-of-7 field goal attempts in the second half. With Seattle trailing 16-14, Micelli drove to his right and got the basket to tie the game. Mosse put Seattle ahead of Tampa after knocking down a pair of free throws with just over 10 minutes to go in the contest, and the home team never looked back en route to the win.

Koch led Tampa in scoring with eight points on 3-of-5 shooting.

June 1, 2017 • Durham, N.C.

DURHAM, N.C. – The contest between San Antonio and Minneapolis proved to be a game of runs, but San Antonio utlimately was crowned the victor after defeating the away team, 48-40.

San Antonio opened the scoring in the contest and jumped out to 9-2 lead on Minnesota. A baseline jumper from Grant Gilliam for Minnesota helped pull the home team within five. A well-run in-bounds play led to a high-percentage shot under the basket that allowed the away squad to move back to a 10-point advantage.

Minneapolis worked its way back into the contest, thanks to some timely scoring and solid free throw shooting from Stefan Weiler, Gilliam and Nigel Fisher. Minneapolis’

offensive output allowed the team to close the half on a 13-2 run and head into the half with a one-point, 18-17 lead.

Gilliam ended the half with 10 points on an efficient 3-of-3 shooting from the field and 4-of-4 shooting from the charity stripe.

In the second half, with the score knotted at 19-19, Jesse Itzler helped give San Antonio the lead for the first time in the second half after finishing a tough layup through traffic.

Minnesota continued to battle in the contest however, tying the game at 23-23 before Jeff Bytomski connected on a layup on the left side of the basket and Rob Lawson drained a baseline jumper to give Minnesota a 27-23 lead.

Not to be outdone, San Antonio stayed close. Ty Shay showed no signs of nerves as the second half wore on, draining a corner three to put San Antonio back up two, 31-29.

Back-to-back free throws during a later San Antonio possession from Shay would give the home team a 33-29 lead.

San Antonio would be unable to maintain the lead however, as Ryan Webb hit a pair of free throws with the score knotted at 36-36 to put the home team up for good.

June 1, 2017 • Durham, N.C.

DURHAM, N.C. – Joel Andersen, competing in just the second K Academy contest of his career, ended his first day on a high note, scoring six points to go along with 16 rebounds and four blocks, but his efforts were not enough, as Dallas fell to Tampa, 31-20.

Andersen provided for Dallas on both ends of the floor to start the game, posting four points, 10 rebounds and four blocks before the end of the first half.

The two teams were evenly matched in the opening stanza, with neither gaining more than a four-point advantage over the other before the break. Dallas saw its largest lead of the half, after Justin Lurie connected on a jumper in the paint, moving the score to 11-7. While Dallas took advantage of second- chance opportunities, scoring four of their nine first-half points off offensive rebounds, Tampa converted nine Dallas turnovers into six points.

Tampa kickstarted what proved to be a decisive second half by going on a 9-0 run.

Mike Koch highlighted the run with a three from the top of the key, before Dallas’ Michael Pagano nailed a two-pointer just inside the arc to draw Tampa’s run to a close. Dan Sutera responded to Pagano’s basket with a long-range two of his own, to once again give Tampa a 13-point lead.

Rob Lawlor, the 2016 Regular Season Most Valuable Player posted similar numbers to those that earned him the moniker a year ago, leading Tampa in rebounds, with seven, and tying teammate Koch in points, with eight. Lawlor also posted a game-high four steals in the contest.

Matthew Estes got in on the scoring for Tampa as well, hitting a mid-range jumper along the baseline with under 1:30 remaining in the contest to give the home squad a 31-18 lead.

Game 8

Team Seattle (2-0) 38

Team Denver (1-1) 32

June 1, 2017 • Durham, N.C.

DURHAM, N.C. – Seattle and Denver treated fans in attendance to a treat in the day one finale of K Academy XV, showcasing a mix of offense and defense in the contest.

In the end, Seattle claimed the win, defeating Denver, 38-32.

After falling behind 5-2 to start the game, Seattle responded by netting 17 unanswered points. Abed Abusaleh jump started the run and Peter Micelli played a critical role by scoring five points. In addition to Micelli and Abusaleh, Rob Poppiti added a pair of points on back-to-back converted free throws and David Mosse hit a runner in the paint, contributing to the deciding run, as well. A Daniel Feldstein layup, made after the Charlotte, N.C., native took the ball coast-to- coast, ended the Seattle run.

With Seattle leading Denver, 19-8, Kurtis Darden hit a pull-up jumper as the clock counted town to the end of the half to bring Denver back to within nine.

Seattle’s defense was as equally proficient as its offense, holding Denver to just 4-of-21 shooting from the field in the first half. Seattle was also opportunistic on the offensive glass in the first half, hauling in nine offensive rebounds and converting those boards into 11 second-chance points.

Denver came out shooting in the second half, with Geoff Oltmans and Robert Fernandez knocking down back-to-back treys for the home squad. An up-and-under by Fernandez five minutes into the second half brought Denver back within five, causing a shift in the momentum that saw Denver connect on a pair of additional baskets, bringing Denver within a point of Seattle.

Feldstein knocked down one of two free throws that tied the game at 23-23. Micelli attacked the rim and drew a foul on the other end of the floor and gave Seattle the lead again. Although Denver threatened in the latter stages of the contest, Seattle held off the late charge to finish the day with a win.
