Instructions for the use of materials on political/civic education of children and youngsters.
The materials are available for download on www.demokratiewebstatt.at category “adults”.
Presentation
These are power point presentations on topics related to democracy that are suitable for use both in school and outside for work with youngsters aged 8 to 12.
Contents
Since 2009 the DemokratieWEBstatt, the children’s webpage of the Austrian Parliament, has provided materials appropriate for use both in school and outside project work on each topic that has been dealt with. These materials can be used to supplement information available on the internet.
The main target is to offer efficient tools for efforts undertaken to create and foster political awareness and related topics.
Structures
The presentations consist of pages of contents (information), samples (action) and incentives aimed at reflection. There is a clearly visible difference between the pages of contents and sample pages.
Further information on the various topics can be found on www.demokratiewebstatt.at part
“topic”.
How to use the materials:
• Teacher centred lesson with power point presentation
• The entire class or group can be presented with the contents, the samples can be dealt with individually, in small groups or the complete group. Another option is to print out the exercise transparencies and hand them out in class.
• Rotation work with printed transparencies
• Print out the presentation and prepare work stations in the classroom where the children can have a go at the exercises. Allow the pupils to wander from one station island to the next giving them the chance to work the topic individually and
independently. They can make notes of their own thoughts on the various stimuli. In a final summary they can then present the topic dealt with in small groups.
• Print outs of transparencies as visual aids
• Individual transparencies can be used as visual aids. The exercise transparencies prove to be especially useful during the lessons or as homework assignments.
