Linguistic R elevance of Discourse Organization

PartoftheinvestigationinprojectsB1andB4is concernedwiththeinteractionbetween InformationStructureandDiscourseSemantics fortheexplanationofdifferentphenomenain geneticallynon-relatedlanguages.We observedthatsimilarprinciplesofdiscourse organizationcanbetracedasrelevantfor structuralvariationinearlyGermaniclanguages aswellasinWestAfricanlanguagesoftheGur group.InearlyGermanic,distinctionsbetween sentencesonpurelydiscourse-related considerationsareresponsibleforthe placementoftheinflectedverbwhileinsome languagesoftheGurgroup,thisisreflectedin verbmorphologyaswellasintheselectionof connectivesincontext.
