I do not have a clue about the odd setting in which Marinetti appears in this photograph, but I do know that Mussolini half-heartedly sent a badly prepared expeditionary corps at Hitler's request to support operation
Barbarossa. This corps, along with the Bulgarian army that accompanied the German assault, was completely wiped out by the Russian counter-attack in 1942. At the same time, the best of the Italian army was fighting in the Mediterranean basin.
