Seating arrangements/floorplans and decoration

When you are organizing a function, you need to decide on the seating arrangement. An appropriate seating arrangement should permit good contact between all the participants.

Everyone should be able to see and hear clearly.

A round table is probably the best option for creating a feeling of cooperation.

Boardroom-style tables give a lot of power to the people at the end.

Tables can also be arranged in a horseshoe shape. This is a good idea if presentations are to be made to the group.

Extra: Why is there no vintage year mentioned with some of the wines above?

Patrick Cole’s function is almost completely planned now. Regarding drinks, it was agreed that waiting staff will serve both the house red and house white during dinner.

The banqueting manager suggests that short descriptions of the wines be put on the tables. In order to do that, let’s find out more about wines in English.

Task: With the help of the wine list below, make a list of adjectives and nouns that are useful when describing wines. Can you add words of your own?

White wines

Chardonnay – El Otro (Chile) Pale yellow, with gold tints. Clean and fresh, with fine, ripe tropical fruit aromas.

2001 Sancerre – Premiere Selection Guy Saget, Burgundy (France) Dry, elegant full gooseberry character, showing a full ripe flavour with excellent balance.

Guidelines for a Sales Talk:

1. Greet the customer; give your name and position (shake hands;

guide to table; offer seat)

2. Make small talk -> make the guest feel welcome; express delight that they chose your hotel.

3. Offer a drink (coffee with milk?/sugar?...)

4. Check that the details you already have of the function are correct (name, date, type of function, number of guests)

5. All other information can be obtained during the meeting:

b. Time schedule?

c. Reception? Set menu? Buffet? Drinks? -> as soon as food is involved you have to ask for special dietary requirements!

d. DJ? Band? Piano player? Dance floor? Projector?

When the guest asks for his/her bill then the check-out procedure begins.

First of all, find all the documents in the system related to the guest’s room number. Then check the payment details on the screen. Confirm with the guest that this is still their preferred method of payment. Now ask the guest which hotel services they used the previous evening, for example: the restaurant, the bar or the mini bar in their room. Check that these charges have been added to the bill. Show the bill to the guest and ask them to check that it is in order. Many hotels ask the guest to sign to confirm that they agree with it. If the guest is not happy with any of the bill then you will need to listen to what the guest says and then check the bill with the departments in question. You may need to alter the bill if there is an error. Now ask the guest to check the bill again and then ask him/her to sign it to confirm that they agree with the amount on it.

Now take payment. If this is by credit card, then swipe the guest’s credit card and wait for the payment to be authorised. If the guest’s company is to be invoiced, then just ask the guest to sign the bill.

Finally, wish the guest a safe onward journey and say you look forward to seeing him/her again in the future.

It is no longer than one page.

It is divided into three to five paragraphs and there is a blank line (= Leerzeile) between them.

The Pre-Interview Phase

During this phase, you will have sent a cover letter, resume, and any other required application materials to the hiring manager. You even may have had a phone interview with the manager before.

You should feel confident—you were invited to have an interview because the manager thinks you could be a good fit for the company!

The Interview Phase: The Beginning

Your interview will take place at the company’s office or virtually using web-based technology.

Most interviews are one-on-one interviews with the manager or supervisor with whom you would be working most closely. Occasionally, you will interview with a human resources employee.

The Interview Phase: Types of Questions

The interview will likely take place in the manager’s office. She may begin with information about her job or the company or engage you in small talk (questions about your commute, etc.). But during the interview she will mostly ask specific questions that assess whether or not you will be a good fit for the company.

Verification Questions

These questions are about yourself and your field of work, such as your vocational training, grade point average (GPA), the number of years you spent at your last job, etc. The interviewer may already know some of these answers. This means she is simply checking the facts on your resume.

Competency/Behavioural Questions

A behavioral question is one in which the interviewer asks you to describe a past situation. These questions are about how you may handle similar situations at a new job. An example of a

behavioral question is, "Describe the toughest challenge you faced at your last job. How did you handle it?"

Situational Questions

A situational question is one in which the interviewer describes a theoretical situation in the future.

You must explain how you would handle the situation. The interviewer wants to know how you will handle situations that may come up in the workplace. An example of a situational question is,

"What would you do if two members of your team had a conflict that affected your productivity?"

This is the time when the hiring manager decides whether or not you are the best fit for the position. This is also the time when you think about whether or not the job is the best fit for you.
