Fact sheet on the campaign

“Violence and multiple discrimination experienced by lesbian, bisexual women and trans* persons

in Germany“

Launched by LesMigraS – Lesbenberatung Berlin e.V. and co-sponsored by the Federal Anti Discrimi-nation Agency - FADA, the campaign was designed not only to get a discussion going among the LBT communities on discrimination and violence experienced by lesbian/bisexual women and trans persons, but also to improve the data available on this issue. To this end, a quantitative and qualitative study was implemented.

The study describes the situation of lesbian/bisexual women and trans persons in connection with violence and discrimination. Moreover, it looks at the intersection of experiences along various lines of social inclusion and exclusion and suggests how specific counselling services can be improved.

The first interim results were presented by LesMigraS at its press conference on 14 June 2012.

The final study results were unveiled by Prof. Castro Varela at a meeting hosted by LesMigraS under the motto “… nicht so greifbar und doch real“ (not really tangible but very real) on 21 September 2012.

The research project proves that lesbian, bisexual women and trans persons in Germany are still exposed to the most diverse experiences of discrimination and violence in the educational, work and health settings, by agencies and authorities and also in the public and private spheres. Particularly trans persons and queers of colour are affected by multiple discrimina- tions. The study effectively shows that racism, heterosexism and cissexism are still highly rele- vant in the German context and that it is still necessary to prevent and control these types of discrimination and violence.

A summary of the project results can be accessed => here, available only in German language.
