Gemeinsam für den Schutz der Meere! Forscher haben kürzlich errechnet, dass im Jahr 2050 mehr Plastik in den Meeren schwimmen könnte als Fische. Wir alle kennen das Problem: eine Flut an Plastikmüll – schon heute und überall. Von der flachen Küstenzone bis in die Tiefen von unter 4500 Meter, von der Nord- und Ostsee bis in die Südsee und die Arktis. Millionen herrenlose Fischernetze geistern durch die Meere, werden zu tödlichen Fallen und belasten das Ökosystem.
Fakt ist: Wir alle sind Teil des Problems – aber auch der Lösung.
Seit Januar 2019 ist OBJECT CARPET Partner der Initiative HEALTHY SEAS. Ein Netzwerk von verschiedenen Akteu- ren aus der Zivilgesellschaft und der Industrie, das sich dem Kampf gegen den Müll-Notstand im Meer und für saubere Ozeane verschrieben hat. Wie dieser Pakt gegen Problem-Plastik konkret aussieht und was Sie persönlich davon haben, erfahren Sie auf den folgenden Seiten.

Let us protect our seas together! Researchers have recently calcu- lated that in the year 2050 in the world’s seas there will be swim- ming more plastic than fish. We all know the problem: a flood of plastic waste – today and everywhere: from the flat coastal zone to the depths below 4500 meters, from the North Sea and Baltic Sea up to the South Seas and the Arctic. Millions of abandoned fishing nets lurk through the seas, become deadly traps and a serious burden for the ecological system.
The fact is: we are all part of the problem – but we are also the solution.
Since January 2019, OBJECT CARPET has been a partner of the HEALTHY SEAS initiative. A network of various players from both civil society and industry have committed to help address the waste emergency in the sea and fight for clean oceans. On the following pages, you can read how this pact against the plastic problem looks like in the practice and what you personally gain from it.
So much in advance: specialized divers from HEALTHY SEAS re- trieve old fishing nets, so-called ghost nets, from the seas. These nets are then processed to ECONYL

Hunderttausende Seevögel, Wale, Delfine, Robben, Schildkröten und zahllose Fische verfangen sich in den Netzen und sterben einen qualvollen und sinnlosen Tod. Weltweit treiben Millionen alter Fischernetze durch die Meere, allein in der Ostsee gehen jedes Jahr bis zu 10.000 Netzteile verloren. Es dauert hunderte von Jahren, bis sich das Material zersetzt – eine lange Zeit, in der die Netze für zahllose Meeresbewohner tödlich sind.

Ghost nets become deadly traps not only for seahorses.
Hundreds of thousands of seabirds, whales, dolphins, seals, turtles and lots of fish get caught in the nets and die painful and senseless deaths. Millions of old fishing nets are float- ing through our seas. In the Baltic Sea alone, up to 10,000 nets get lost every year. It will take hundreds of years before this material is decomposed – a long time, during which innumerable sea inhabitants will die in these nets.

Tauchgang mit nachhaltigem Gewinn: Mit an Bord OBJECT CARPET Im Jahr 2013 wurde die Initiative HEALTHY SEAS (www.healthyseas.org) ins Leben gerufen. Das ambitionierte Ziel: herrenlose Geisternetze aus den Meeren zu bergen und verhindern, dass Netze überhaupt ins Meer gelangen oder auf Mülldeponien enden – in Kooperation mit Fischern und Fischfarmen. HEALTHY SEAS bringt unter- schiedliche Interessensgruppen zusammen: Taucher, Fischer, NGOs (Nichtregierungs- organisationen), Regierungen, Gemeinden sowie Bergungs-, Recycling- und Produktionsunternehmen. Mit gezielter Öffentlichkeitsarbeit soll das Netzwerk zum Schutz der Meere ausgeweitet werden.
Best-Practice-Ansätze stehen zur Disposition, ebenso wie Veranstaltungen und Trainingskurse, um insbesondere auch junge Menschen für das Thema zu sensibili- sieren. Ein Gewinn für alle Beteiligten und für die Ökosysteme.
Diving with sustainable profit: with OBJECT CARPET on board
In the year 2013, the HEALTHY SEAS initiative was launched (www.healthyseas.org).
It was an ambitious goal: to gather ghost nets from the sea and prevent nets from ever finding their way into the sea or ending up on landfills in the first place – in cooperation with fishermen and fish farms. HEALTHY SEAS brings together a diverse array of players: divers, fishermen, NGOs (non-governmental organizations), govern- ments, municipalities, as well as recovery, recycling and production companies. With targeted public relations, this network should be expanded to protect the seas.
To reach this goal, best-practice approaches are available – as well as events and training courses, especially those designed to raise awareness in young people about this topic. A win-win situation for all parties involved and for the ecosystems.
HEALTHY SEAS REPORT
Im Zeitraum zwischen 2013-2018 hat die Initiative HEALTHY SEAS, gemeinsam mit Tauchern und Fischerei-Verbänden, 453 Tonnen Geisternetze geborgen. Diese wurden von Nofir A.S., einem Unternehmen mit Sitz in Norwegen, gereinigt und danach durch das Unternehmen Aquafil zu ECONYL®-Garn regeneriert. ECONYL® dient als Aus- gangsprodukt für viele nachhaltige Produkte, z.B. Teppichböden.
HEALTHY SEAS REPORT
In cooperation with divers and fishermen's organizations, in the period between 2013- 2018, the HEALTHY SEAS initiative has hauled 453 tons of ghost fishing nets from the seas. These nets were cleaned by Nofir A.S., a company based in Norway, and then regenerated by Aquafil to ECONYL®-yarn. ECONYL® is used as raw material for many sustainable products, such as carpet flooring.

Kurzbiografie
Pascal ist ein von GUE geschulter Spezialist im technischen Tauchen, mit Schwerpunkt Wracktauchen. Weltweit hat er Hunderte von Tauchgängen gemacht. Während dieser Tauchgänge stieß er immer wieder auf herumschwimmende Fischernetze und sah, welche traurige und schwere Konse- quenzen dies für die Unterwasserwelt hat.
Da er im Jahr 2009 das erste holländische Projekt der Nordsee-Säuberung mitbegrün- dete, war für ihn die Befreiung der Nordsee von herrenlosen Fischernetzen ein wichtiges Anliegen. Seine Erfahrungen und seine Vision brachten Pascal 2012 dazu, seine Tätigkeit als Taucher voll und ganz dem Umweltschutz zu widmen. So gründete er die Ghost-Fishing- Stiftung – eine internationale, gemeinnützige Organisation von freiwilligen Tauchern, die die Initiative zur Beseitigung der in Meeren verlorenen Fischernetze ins Leben rief und heute diese unterstützt und fördert.
Short biography
Pascal is a GUE trained technical diver with a strong preference for wreck diving. He made hundreds of dives all over the world. During these dives, he encountered lost- and aban- doned fishing gear and the sad and severe consequences for life under water. Since he co-founded the first Dutch North Sea clean- up project in 2009, he became driven by the removal of lost gear in the North Sea.
Based on his experience and specific vision on diving operations related to environmental issues, Pascal decided in 2012 to dedicate his diving exclusively to environmental protection and started the Ghost Fishing Foundation – an international non-profit executed by volunteer technical divers which initiates, supports and promotes lost fishing gear removal initiatives.
Healthy Seas arbeitet mit freiwilligen Tauchern der Ghost Fishing Foundation in Europa zusammen, um die in den Meeren und Ozeanen verloren gegangenen Fischernetze zu bergen und um so viele Meerestiere wie möglich zu retten. Die Tauchgänge sind sehr schwierig und gefährlich, da die Taucher oft bei schlechten Sichtverhältnissen tauchen müssen, beispielsweise in der Nord- see. Mit einer Gruppe von Tauchern können ca. 300 kg Geister- netze am Tag geborgen werden. Wie solche Bergungs- und Ret- tungsarbeiten genau ablaufen, beantwortet uns Pascal van Erp, Gründer der Ghost Fishing-Taucher und Tauchkoordinator für HEALTHY SEAS.
Wie sind Sie zu HEALTHY SEAS gekommen? Woher kam die Motivation, die Bergung der Netze ehrenamtlich zu machen – die Arbeit ist ja zeitintensiv und gefährlich. ::
Seit vielen Jahren taucht unser Team nach Schiffswracks. An diesen Tauchplätzen findet man oft Netze, die beim Fischen hängengeblieben sind. Unser Team hat die Initiative ergriffen, um gemeinsam mit anderen gleichgesinnten Tauchern Aufräum-Tauchgänge zu organisieren. Dies hat die Gründer der HEALTHY SEAS-Initiative auf uns aufmerksam gemacht.
HEALTHY SEAS hat uns angeboten, die geborgenen Fischernetze zu übernehmen, um daraus wieder etwas Nützliches zu machen. Das Entfernen von Netzen ist eine hochpräzise Arbeit und nicht ungefähr- lich. Deshalb arbeiten wir nur mit einem gut ausgebildeten Team. Die Mitglieder kennen sich gegenseitig sehr gut und jeder befolgt die sehr strengen technischen Standards und Verfahren, um maximale Sicherheit zu gewährleisten.
Woher weiß man, wo sich Netze befinden? ::
Dies ist leider sehr einfach zu beantworten: Netze befinden sich auf jedem Objekt, das sich vom sandigen Meeresboden abhebt. Dies kann ein Wrack, ein Stein oder ein Riff sein, oder eine Anhäufung von Müll.
Netze können an allem hängen bleiben, was sich vom Meeresboden abhebt.
Wo tauchen Sie und wie oft? Wie sieht ein Tauchgang aus?
Wer gehört zum Team? ::
Wir tauchen in ganz Europa und an jedem Wochenende, wenn die Wetterbedingungen es zulassen. Zum Beispiel bedeutet ein normaler Nordseetauchgang in unserem eigenen Land (den Niederlanden) zwei Tauchgänge pro Tag, bei ruhiger See (Gezeitenwechsel). Das Intervall be- trägt dann 6 Stunden. Wir tauchen mit einem Team von 6-12 Tauchern, die alle geschult sind und auf dieselbe Weise arbeiten, sodass wir schnell auf Probleme reagieren können, die unter Wasser auftreten können.
Zur Bergung gehört auch die Rettung von Tieren. Welches Erlebnis ist Ihnen besonders in Erinnerung gebleiben? ::
Bei der Rettung von Tieren gibt es keinen Einzelfall, der in Erinnerung bleibt. Was ich beobachtet habe ist, dass kein einziges Tier vor Geister- netzen sicher ist. Leider finden wir alle Arten von Fischen, die in Netzen verheddert sind, sowie Haie, Delfine, Robben und auch seltener vorkom- mende Tiere wie Kraken, Seesterne oder sogar Seegurken. Wir haben alles gesehen und es ist sehr beunruhigend.
Was spornt Sie an, mit der Arbeit weiter zu machen? ::
Geisternetze sind ein großes Problem, das von Tag zu Tag größer wird.
Es wird geschätzt, dass jedes Jahr in den Meeren und Ozeanen 640.000 Tonnen Fangnetze verloren gehen oder aufgegeben werden. Bei jedem Tauchgang stoßen wir auf neue, verlorene Netze. Als Team versuchen wir unser Bestes, um dieses Problem aktiv zu lösen und indem wir Maßnah- men ergreifen, um die Öffentlichkeit darüber zu informieren.
SAVE THE SEAS
Healthy Seas works together with volunteer divers of the Ghost Fishing Foundation in Europe to recover the mountains of fishing nets that have been lost in the seas and oceans and to save as many marine animals as possible. The work divers do is very difficult and dangerous as they often have to go on dives with bad visibility conditions, for example in the North Sea.
A group of divers is able to recover 300 kg of ghost nets within a day. Pascal van Erp, a Ghost Fishing diver and the Diving Coordinator for Healthy Seas, will explain how such rescue process exactly works.
How did you come to HEALTHY SEAS? Where did he come from?
Motivation to volunteer to salvage the nets – the work is time consuming and dangerous. ::
Since many years our team has been diving at shipwrecks. It is most of- ten at those diving spots that fishing gear gets caught and subsequently lost by fishermen. Our team took the initiative to organize clean up dives together with other like-minded divers and this got the attention of the founders of the HEALTHY SEAS initiative who offered to take the recovered fishing nets from us and do something useful with them. The removal of nets is a high precision job and not without danger, therefore we only operate with a well-trained team. Each member knows each other very well and everyone follows very strict technical diving stan- dards and procedures to ensure maximum safety.
How do you know where nets are? ::
Unfortunately, this is very easy to answer: Nets are found on any under- water object. This could be a wreck, stone or reef of huge amount of rubbish. Fishing gear can get stuck and lost at anything projecting from the sandy sea bottom.
Where do you dive and how often? What does a dive look like?
Who belongs to the team? ::
We dive all over Europe and every weekend if the weather conditions allow it. For example, a regular North Sea dive in our own country (the Netherlands) means two dives a day exactly at slack water (changing tides). The interval between slack water is 6 hours. We dive with a team of 6-12 divers who are all trained and operating the same way so we can respond fast to any issue that may arise underwater.
Salvage includes the rescue of animals. Which experience is particularly remembered?
In terms of rescuing animals, there is not one single instance that sticks to mind. What I have observed is that no single animal is safe from ghost fishing gear. Unfortunately, we find any kind of fish entangled in nets, as well as sharks, dolphins, seals and also less common animals like octopuses, starfish or even sea cucumbers. We have seen it all and it is very worrying.
What motivates you to continue working? ::
Ghost fishing is a huge problem which is only getting bigger every day.
It is estimated that 640,000 tons of fishing gear is lost or abandoned in the seas and oceans each year. Every time we dive we encounter new lost fishing gear. As a team, we are trying our best to solve this problem by taking action and exposing the problem for the eyes of the public as much as we can.

Seit seiner Gründung im Jahr 2012 hat sich das Label FRAME – mit Hauptsitz in London und Los Angeles – für hochwertige Herrenmode im Markt etabliert. Das kreierte Modekonzept steht für den urbanen, eleganten Mann mit Klasse. Neben Kleidung, Schuhen, Accessoires und Parfüms gehören auch moderne Kunstwerke zu der Linie.
Die neue Boutique im Trade and Business Center Novinsky in Moskau ist bewusst im Charme der 70er Jahre gehalten. Das Architekturstudio METHOD entwarf das Interieur, welches im Einklang mit den Kollektionen steht – in denen Exklusivität, hochwertige Materialien und unverwechselbare Stilrichtungen im Vordergrund stehen. Die OBJECT CARPET Teppichfliesen CANYON mit den feinen Strukturen und Farbnuancen passen formal und inhaltlich zu allen anderen Gestaltungselementen.
Die sehr gute Life-Cycle-Bilanz waren ein wesentlicher Grund für den Einsatz der strapazierfähigen SL-Fliesen der Kollektion PLACES OF ORIGIN.
Since its foundation in 2012, the FRAME label, headquartered in London and Los Angeles, has established itself in the high-quality men's fashion market. The created fashion concept is a symbol of an urban and elegant man with a sense of style. In addition to clothing, shoes, accessories and perfumes, the line also includes modern works of art.
The new boutique in the Novinsky Trade & Business Centre in Moscow is intentionally suspen- ded in the charm of the 1970s. The METHOD architecture studio created the interior, which is in line with the collections – in which exclusivity, high quality materials and distinctive styles are in the foreground. The tiles CANYON from OBJECT CARPET, with their fine structures and colour nuances tone, go well together with both form and content of all other design elements.
The excellent lifecycle balance was a major reason for the use of durable SL-Tiles from the PLACES OF ORIGIN collection.

For the design of the office locations in London, Shanghai and St. Petersburg, OBJECT CARPET delivered a total of 9,000 sq.m of SL-Tiles. Focused on tomorrow's worlds of work – a stone's throw away from the current headquarters in Stuttgart-Denkendorf.
