PRIZE ESSAYS OIV THE HI\DU VEDAS.
A Hindu MercLant of Bombay bai deposited the aum of Rupeea
two thousand with Messrs. William Nicol & Co. for the three
beat Essays on tbe following subject: —
Review of the Vedas, toilh special reference to the light
uihich they cast on the Social and Religious State of the Ancienl
Indians, and on their Beliefs and Practices as better lhan those of
the Hindu of later limes.
The following are the conditions of the Competition.
1. The Essays are to be in the English language; and it is
recommended that they shall not exceed in hulk 300 or 400
pages 8ro. pica type.
2. The author of the best Essay will receive a prize of
twelve hundred rupees. It is expected that he will either arrange
for its puhlication on his own account within six months of hia
gaining the prize, or give up hia manuscript, with its copyright,
to the donor of the prize for his disposal.

3. The author uf the second best Essay to receive a prize
of five huodred rupees; and the author of the third best Essay,
a prize of three huodred rupees.
4. All passages from the Vedas und other works given in
proof and illustration to he expressly referred to in distinct notea,
mentioning the places in which they occur. A list of original
Dreatiaes and papers hy European and Indian authors, bearing on
the subject of the Essays and the works on which they are
founded , to be given in an Appendix.
5. The adjudication of the prizes to be left to the following
gentlemen: — The Reverend John Wilson, D. D. , P. R. S.,
Honorary President of tbe Bomhay Branch of the Royal Aaiatic
Society; Martin Haug, Esquire, Ph. D., Profeaior of Sanakrit,
and Superintendent of Sanslirit Studies, io tlie l'un» College;
Dr. Uliuw Duji, G. G. M. C. and Fellow of the Unirersity of
Bomhay; the Rev. Dliunjibhui Nouroji ; and Rao Sahcb Wish-
wanuth Naruyan Mundalik, Bomhay, M. B. B. R. A. S.
6. Kach Competitive Bssay, with a motto and sealed note
containing the nnme of the Author, to be placed in the hnnds of
Dr. Wilson on or before the 1st .4ugust 1863. The Competition
ia apea to all dasaea of people witbout nay dtatinction.
7. If the writer of the best Essay will give a Sanskrit
version of it, he will receive Rupees three hundred additional.

Es ist schon öfter vorgekommen , dass der Verfasser eines Buchs
sieh über den Werth desselben eine günstigere Meinung gebildet hat,
als ein Beurtheiler gerechtfertigt findet, und in Erwägung dieses Er¬
fahrungssatzes würde ieh mich einer Antwort auf die Bd. XV. S. 161—172
enthaltene Entgegnung auf meine Anzeige des Steinschneiderschen
„Bibliographischen Handbuches" überhoben halten können, wenn nicht
die Anklage ungerechter Behandlung und der Versuch, von meinen Be¬
merkungen so viel wie irgend möglich als unbegründet und unnötbig
und zwar dies mit wenig aufrichtigen Mitteln darzustellen, mich zu
einer Auseinandersetzung des Sachverhaltes nöthigte.
In erstererfieziehung giebt der Vf. nicht undeutlich zu verstehen, es sei bei der Recension nicht so sehr auf sein Buch, wie auf seine Person
abgesehen gewesen, welches Mittel Interesse zu erregen auch nicht
neu ist. Für den, der sehen will, wird es indess leicht erkennbar sein,
dass die von mir gemachten Ausstellungen lediglich sachlicher Natur
sind , eigentliche Verbesserungen andeuten und von dem erklärten
Wunsche ausgehn, die Ausführung möge eben so gut gerathen sein,
als Unternehmen und Plan gebilligt waren. Was zum Lob des Ver¬
fassers gereichen kann, war hervorgehoben, und es sind dabei vielleicht
etwas stärkere Ausdrücke gebraucht, als nach abermaliger und ge¬
nauer Untersuchung des Buches gerechtfertigt- scheinen dürften; ja
manches , das ein ungünstiges Licht mehr auf das Verfahren des Ver¬
fassers , als auf die Brauchbarkeit des Buches zu werfen geeignet war,
war mit Schonung verschwiegen worden. Speziell aber glaubt der Vf.,
„nicht die letzte Veranlassung zu dieser Anzeige" sei die Haltung, die er
gegen Hm. Fürst einnimmt, und Rec. habe keine „unparteiliche Stel¬
lung." Hierauf darf ihm versichert werden, dass er sich Illusionen
macht, wenn er sich schmeichelt, man werde es für der Mühe werth
balten, in dieser feindlichen Brüder Zwist „ Partei" zu ergreifen ; we¬
nigstens dem Rec. steht der eine so völlig fern, als der andere. Auch soll, ungeachtet man so frei gewesen ist, ein Buch, das dem Vf so viel Herz-
weh macht, als ein „immerhin" — deutsche Leser werden das Wort
