Session at AAIS (Tucson, 26-28 Mar 20)

The University of Arizona, Arizona, Mar 26–28, 2020 Deadline: Dec 10, 2019

Laura Petican and John Hatch, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Italian Art and Design Post-WWII: Nationalisms and Counter-Nationalisms

The session on "Italian Art and Design Post-WWII: Nationalisms and Counter-Nationalisms" at the 3rd joint conference of the American Association for Italian Studies and the American Association of Teachers of Italian welcomes papers that address the following:

The question of national identity continues to underpin the trajectory of Italian art and design long after the counter-nationalism surrounding the end of World War II. Nearly fifty years after MoMA’s survey, ‘Italy: The New Domestic Landscape,’ a pluralistic conception of the arts and an internatio- nal outlook have continued to agitate notions of national belonging. With an eye to the upcoming

‘Radical: Italian Design 1965-1985’ exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, this session poses questions related to the notion of anti-nationalist bias in Italian art and design and the flail- ing possibility of national identity in the twenty-first century.

Deadline for submissions: 10 December 2019. Please email a working title, a 150-word abstract and a 2-page cv to laura.petican@tamucc.edu. Graduate students should also forward a letter of support from their supervisor. Selections will be made by 20 December 2019. Any inquiries may be directed to session chairs Laura Petican, Texas A&M University (laura.petican@tamucc.edu) and John Hatch, Western University (jhatch@uwo.ca).
