Task 2

Take a look at the facts and questions below and guess the correct answers. Write down your ideas next to each fact given.

This building houses an observation deck and a restaurant and is almost 147 meters high and therefore one of the tallest buildings in Berlin.

This underground line has a total of 40 stops and it takes around fifty-seven minutes to go from one end to the other.

This district of Berlin was first established in the year 1220 and therefore is the oldest district of the entire city and its outskirts (= Randgebiete).

This cinema was built in 1957 and was the first of its kind to house more than one screen rooms. Many famous movies had their world premieres in it.

Venice (= Venedig) is referred to as the city of the thousand bridges with having a total number of 400 only. Guess how many bridges Berlin has.

The building of this famous hotel once housed the Dresdner Bank and its spa area is located in the former strong room (= Tresorraum).

Task 1

Guest: Thanks. We’d like dinner after our visit there. Is there a restaurant nearby you could recommend?

Receptionist: Yes, madam. When you leave Museum Island turn left and walk straight on. You’ll find a nice restaurant on your right-hand side opposite a taxi rank and next to a set of traffic lights. It’s only 10 minutes on foot or about 3 minutes by taxi.

Useful pieces of advice

Make use of headlines and different colors to make your transparency/poster more appealing to the reader.

Mind the size of your handwriting on a poster (at least three fingers high).

Watch your spelling and grammar as they will be graded too!

You may choose from sights and attractions that are not on the list so far (e.g. special bars and restaurants, interesting spots to enjoy music or other types of performing arts, …). You will find some inspiration on the following website:

Task 2b

Write an article on two sights of Berlin which will be published (=

herausgegeben) in your monthly hotel magazine. For this include the bullet points (= Stichpunkte) from task 2 on page 10. Make use of the following aspects:

•correct tenses (Past Simple, Present Perfect, Present Simple)

•relative clauses (e.g. The sight XY, which is located at …)

linking words to connect your sentences (e.g. Furthermore, … Moreover, … Also, …)

•the sights should be suitable for adventurous people who do not want to spend too much money

Write around 200 words and be prepared to read it out to the class.

Presentation: Suitable sights for different target groups

Guideline: How to write an article

Find an interesting title for your article that grabs the attention of your target group.

Structure your article using an introduction, a main part and a conclusion (= Schlussteil).

o Introduction Say what you are going to write about and what details you want to mention in your article.

o Main part Write down all the facts. Use one paragraph (= Absatz) for each fact.

o Conclusion Give your own opinion (= Meinung) why you think this sight is interesting.

Use formal language (no bad language and no abbreviations (= Abkürzungen) such as doesn´t or aint .

Use neutral language Do not try to be too negative nor too positive about your topic. You may, however, write a little bit more emotional in your conclusion.

Get your tenses (= Zeitformen) right:

o Past Simple For things that happened in the past only (e.g. The building was built in 1920)!

o Present Perfect For things that have started in the past and still have an effect on the present (e.g. The sight has become popular over the last couple of years).

o Present Simple For things that regularly take place in

the present (e.g. The sight is open every day). y

The rooms have to be equipped with photocopying facilities, fax and wireless internet connection.

Tina: That’s no problem, Mr Watson. We actually offer free internet access in all of our rooms. The conference rooms are also equipped with overhead projectors, flipcharts, TV and DVD player.

Moreover, there’s secretarial help available on request.

Mr. Watson: That sounds good. Well, as you know a business day can be quite tiring. What kind of leisure facilities do you offer at the hotel?

Tina: We’ve got a large sauna and a fitness centre that you may use.
