Natural gas
Production, import and consumption
In 2004, the largest natural gas producers were the USA (20.2%), Russia (21.9%), Canada (6.8%), Great Britain (3.6%), Iran (3.2%), Algeria (3%), Indonesia (2.7%) and Holland (2.6%). The EU contributed only 8% to world production (BP Statistical Review of World Energy of 2005, www.bp.com).
The contribution of natural gas to total Swiss energy consumption is 12.1%. Of the natural gas imported into Switzerland in 2004, 51.9% came from Germany, 22.6%
from Holland, 9.5% from Russia, 10.5% from France and 5.5% from Italy. In the case of Germany, more than 4/5 is imported, of which 41% came from Russia.
National energy statistics and www.erdgas.ch Reserves
At the end of 2004 BP estimated the proven natural gas reserves were 179 000 billion m3, sufficient to cover the next 62 years at today's rate of consumption. If the antici- pated and possible reserves are taken into account, the coverage extends beyond 100 years.
