2 Warming-up: Creating our landscape on the Alpine map

Intro round and context Landscapes

Landscape is a source for and a mirror of our activities. We influence its functions and aesthetics through our economy and planning. Landscape shows which are our priorities and also needs.

CIPRA’s projects deal with these topics. In the frame of the project AlpES information about ecosystem services was collected, analysed and distributed. The project BeeAware! is focusing on the role of the bees for our agriculture and biodiversity, while Living Labs and Re-ImagineAlps focus on relations between humans, and between humans and nature. We try to

address this complexity by including different stakeholders.

Culture and nature are important aspects of the Alps and we should take them into account while planning Alpine landscape.

Barbara Wülser, Co-director CIPRA International

3 CIPRA Liechtenstein:

Use all imagination to create two extreme ways

of managing the

landscape – completely touristic way or extreme nature protection. All happened on the map and gave the participants opportunity to see what these two options bring.

CIPRA Germany:

Travelling from Lindau

(Bodensee) to

Berchtesgaden to test the connections with public transport, interview young people about them and show the lack of them in this (east-west) direction.

CIPRA Slovenia:

Starting with a round table about Western capercaillie and cable car and ending with a fire in the Alps – a three day programme of workshops and hiking to Vršič pass.

(7)

4 CIPRA France: Production of short

videos/interviews about landscape and tourism themes.

CIPRA Italy: Transformations of the Alpine landscape through images and testimonials – a lecture with photos of changing landscape through time and debate about drivers for it.

CIPRA South Tyrol: Two day workshop about effects of agriculture and tourism on landscape took place in Val Venosta; spending one day in Malles and one at the Stelvio.

CIPRA Austria: Two day hiking and camping for young people from the city – learning about “outdoor life”.

Excursion KARTABAR: A Collective Discussion of the Liechtenstein Spatial Culture

The association ELF aims to create innovative and accessible platforms for spatial development issues.

They listen, write, collect and illustrate what the inhabitants of Liechtenstein have to offer in terms of knowledge and thoughts about their living space.

More Info: https://vereinelf.li/

Key- Note: Landscape and participatory processes

Shaping landscapes through participatory processes is an important part in making sure people find a place attractive as a living space for generations to come. To approach such participatory planning processes – from micro to meso to macro scale – taking a community economies approach can be beneficial as it brings to light activities that support the good life of people and nature, which through other approaches often remain unconsidered or marginal. Community economies are about creating ways to sustain livelihoods that are about surviving well together, both amongst humans as well as humans and nature.

The Horizon 2020-funded project Alpine Community Economies Lab focuses on such a community economies approach in the Vallagarina valley in Northern Italy. It does so through a walk-in research lab and participatory workshops in close collaboration with local two partner projects: La Foresta – Community Academy – a social and cultural space at the train station of Rovereto and Comunità Frizzante – Making Drinks for Making Community, a fizzy drinks project focusing on local flavours and connecting people to the local landscape.
