DIABLO PRINTER SUPPLIES

The wide variety of print wheels and ribbon cartridges available from Diablo permits selection of the best print wheel-ribbon combination for each printing application.

Diablo continues developing new print wheel type styles and ribbons. It encourages inquiries from users requiring supplies not included in Diablo's present selection. All inquiries should be directed to the nearest Diablo sales office.

This edition of the Printer Supplies Catalog differs in that the print wheel technical data contained in earlier editions has not been included. A comprehensive Print Wheel Data Manual is being planned to provide technical information regarding print wheel character/spoke ad- dressing, recommended print hammer energies and proportional space units. Until the Data Manual is available, the technical data in the previous edition of this catalog (No. 90007-04 dated 3/80) may still be used.

RIBBONS

Ribbons offered by Diablo fall into two categories, fabric and multistrike film ribbons.

Fabric ribbons are made from continuous loops of cloth stuffed into the ribbon cartridge. This allows the fabric to continuously cycle in front of the print wheel as the printer is used. With this type of ribbon, new cartridges print darker and wider when fresh and gradually lose density with use. The user is left to determine from the density of their printouts when it is time to change the cartridge.

Multistrike ribbons are wound reel to reel within a cartridge which provides ease of handling and avoids direct handling of the ribbon itself. The total number of characters printed by a cartridge is determined by ribbon length and pitch of printout. Diablo's new high capacity black multi strike cartridge provides a significant reduction in cost per character.

Table 1 identifies the type of print wheel to be used on each of the various models of Diablo printers and terminals_

PRINT WHEELS

This catalog lists both plastic and metalized print wheels_

The plastic wheels are economical and produce good print quality_ The metalized wheels have a metal coating that increases their durability and permits designing the type face for the best possible print image. Metalized print wheels, when used with a multistrike ribbon, produce superb print quality.

The Model 630 can use both plastic and metalized print wheels; the other models are designed to use only one or the other. Do not attempt to use a metalized print wheel on a printer designed for plastic wheels only, or a plastic print wheel on a printer designed for metalized wheels only.

All plastic print wheels have a 96-character set. Metalized wheels come in groups of 88, 92 or two formats of 96 characters. The 1355WP printer is configured to use metalized print wheels from anyone of these groups.

Model 630 and Series 1650 printers and terminals can use all metalized print wheels; however, special firm- ware is required to support Rank Xerox (nondomestic) 92 and 96 character wheels. Settings for wheel selection on the Model 630 and the Series 1650 are by program control or manually by switches on the operator control panel.

CHARACTER SPACING

Diablo supplies both plastic and metalized print wheels for 10-pitch and 12-pitch printer operation as well as proportional spacing metalized wheels. The 10-pitch wheels are designed for printing at 10 characters per inch, and the 12-pitch wheels at 12 characters per inch.

With proportional spacing, the printing system closely adjusts character spacing so that character size and density are carefully balanced with surrounding empty space for maximum aesthetic appearance and readability.

With proportional spacing, since all characters are not allotted the same amount of space, the number of characters per inch will vary. Diablo will introduce a IS-pitch metal wheel during 1981.

The character spacing for each print wheel generally is identified within the print wheel title. For example:

Courier 1 a - (1 a-pitch) Artisan Legal 12 - (12-pitch)

Gothic PS - (Proportional Spacing)

There are, however, exceptions to this rule (Courier 72, for example, is a 1 a-pitch wheel).

The character spacing for each of the metalized print wheels is easily distinguished by color coding of the print wheel lettering.
