today

Brill’s core activities lie in specialized market niches in the humanities and international law and, to a restric- ted extent, in the sciences. The company supplies a wide range of high quality, professionally relevant lite- rature to libraries and individual academics. Providing service to authors and readers and to all those in the intermediate chain who are of importance is the core competence of Brill.

Back in the early days

Ever since its beginnings in 1683, Brill has been based in Leiden, home of the oldest university of the Nether- lands. Founded during the golden age of Dutch his- tory and culture, Brill has had a rich publishing history, including the publication of Bayle’s influential Dicti- onnaire Historique et Critique, the inception of one of the first scholarly journals in Chinese studies T’oung Pao, the publication of the Nag Hammadi codices for UNESCO and a wealth of major reference works in our

areas of specialization. The international nature of our publishing program is perhaps best exemplified by the Encyclopaedia of Islam, a work now into its 3rd edi- tion and still founded on the principles of international scholarly collaboration and review.

products

Brill publishes over 700 books per year in both print and electronic format. Titles are often collated in Brill's E-Book Collection. The E-Book collections are sold by copyright year. Brill publishes 200 journals tit- les – including 16 e-only titles and 6 full open access titles. Many of Brill’s journals are indexed by major ab- stracting & indexing services, such as Web of Science and Scopus. All back volumes are digitized and are included in the Brill Journal Archives Online.

In addition to its journals and books publishing pro- grammes, Brill also offers reference works and primary source materials, including prestigious publications such as the Encyclopedia of Islam, Brill’s New Pauly and The Hague Academy Collected Courses. Primary sources usually refer to original material, which schol- ars study and interpret as a basis for their own acade- mic works. Brill’s Primary Source Collections include scanned printed or handwritten texts, e.g. pre-modern archival documents, Oriental manuscripts, but also printed art sales catalogues and contemporary human rights reports.
