Capitals by Design: Architecture, the Arts, & Public Spectacle in St.

Petersburg & Washington, D.C., 1703-2003 Location: District of Columbia, United States Conference Date: 2003-03-28

This interdisciplinary and international symposium will mark the 300th anniversary of the foundation of St. Petersburg and the 200th anniversary of the first stages of planning and building Washington D.C. Sessions will focus on the relationships of city planning and architectural styles to the functions and forms of government; the roles of official and unofficial cultures in the formation of civic identities; public and political spectacles in the capitals; and the emergence of distinctive artistic tendencies in the modern era.

Keynote speaker is Dmitrii Shvidkovskii. Other speakers include:

Blair Ruble (Kennan Institute); James Cracraft (University of Illinois-Chicago); Howard Gillette (Rutgers University); Ewa Berard (CNRS, Paris); Karen Kettering (Hillwood Museum & Gardens); Richard Stites (Georgetown University); Pamela Scott (National Building Museum); Alison Hilton (Georgetown University); James Miller (George Washington University); Alla Rosenfeld (The Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum, Rutgers University)
