RGASPI, Moscow: New Archival Guide on CPSU Holdings.
The Russian State Archive of Social and Political History (RGASPI) has now published a 4rd volume in the collection of archival guides, this time covering the holdings of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and its predecessor and side organisations. Besides a detailed introduction by RGASPI veteran Jurij Amiantov, it contains detailed characteristics of the holdings. The description of the party materials is structured as following:
• Party congresses and conferences
• Leading organs (Central Committee, Politbureau, Orgbureau, Secretariat, Agitprop- Department etc.)
• Federal and regional governing organs
• Control organs (Central Control Commission, Central Revision Comission etc.)
• Central party institutions (Central propaganda bureaus for national minorities, party fractions within unions and mass organisations, political departments of the People's Commissariats, party press, party-affiliated scientific institutes and societies).
As an addendum, the guide contains agendas of the CPSU's Central Committee plenary meetings from 1919 to 1943, and a table of federal and regional CP branches whose records are kept in the RGASPI. A personal and organisational index is supplied as well.

Digitalisierungsprojekte der Vereinigung zur Förderung des Archivwesens: Politbüro der KPdSU und Internationale Brigaden im Spanischen Bürgerkrieg.
Das Projekt "Politbüro der KPdSU" der Vereinigung zur Förderung des Archivwesens (VFA) befindet sich in einem fortgeschrittenen Stadium. Bislang ist die Digitalisierung der Protokolle des Politbüros in allen Fassungen der Jahrgänge 1919 bis 1929 abgeschlossen worden. Bis Ende 2008 werden die Protokolle von 1930 hinzukommen. Damit werden unter http://www.polit-buro.com die Protolle von rund 800 Sitzungen des Politbüros mit ca. 65.000 Seiten gescannter Dokumente für die wissenschaftliche Forschung verfügbar sein.
Als Ergebnis des von der Vereinigung zur Förderung des Archivwesens betriebenen Digitalisierungsprojekts der Bestände der Internationalen Brigaden des Spanischen Bürgerkrieges (RGASPI-Fond 545) sind inzwischen 250.000 Seiten gescannter Dokumente unter http://www.interbrigades.com benutzbar. Dies entspricht ca. 2/3 des gesamten Bestandes, wobei hierin auch zahlreiche Karten, Pläne, Plakate und Fotos eingeschlossen sind. Der Zugang zu den bisherigen elektronischen Teilergebnissen ist im Bundesarchiv Berlin möglich.
Die Vereinigung zur Förderung des Archivwesens konstituierte sich in der Nachfolge des vom International Committee for the Computerization of the Comintern Archives (INCOMKA), unter dessen Ägide über 1,3 Millionen Seiten des Komintern-Archivs digitalisiert, die u.a.
dem deutschen Nutzer im Rahmen einer DFG-Nationallizenz zur Verfügung stehen (siehe http://www.nationallizenzen.de/angebote/nlproduct.2006-03-20.3434752448).
ROSSPEN Publishers, Moscow:New Publication Series „Istorija Stalinizma / History of Stalinism“
The leading Russian historical publisher ROSSPEN („The Russian Political Encyclopedy“) has launched a monographical series of huge proportions: in cooperation with the Yeltsin- Foundation, 100 monographs on the history of Stalinism will be issued within the next years.
The goal is, according to the publisher’s press statement, „to implement the results of historical analysis, based on the achievements of the ‚archival revolution’, (...) into the fabric of public consciousness.“ Without this, as the press release goes, „it is impossible for a civilization of a modern type to appear in Russia“. To strengthen the public and educational effort of this undertaking, half of the print run of each book will be given away to public and university libraries all over Russia.
The first volumes of the series were premiered at the „Non/fiction“ book fair in Moscow in December 2007 and reached the stores in the first half of 2008. The official launching of the series took place at a large-scale scholarly conference organized by ROSSPEN in cooperation with various archives and institutions. It was called „History of Stalinism. Results and Problems of Research“ and took place from 5 to 7 December, 2008, in Moscow, featuring several thematic panels with a large number of presentations by Russian and Western scholars, including most authors of the series. Until the end of 2008, already 18 books of the series were released. Among them are translated monographs by respected Western historians such as Sheila Fitzpatrick, Jörg Baberowski, Mark Jansen and Peter Solomon, but also new Russian volumes on Soviet history, which are nothing short of their Western counterparts. New Declassifications in Russian Archives 2007-2008.
Volume 8 (2007) of the declassification bulletin issued by Russia’s Federal Archival Agency gives an overview over a multitude of declassified files in Russian state archives, mostly on military industry, including the secret nuclear complex. Some of the most promising declassifications concerning the history of the international communist movement may be those in the Russian State Archive of Social and Political History (RGASPI), which include large portions of the fonds of Georgij Čičerin and Vjačeslav Molotov. Yet even more crucial is the declassification of large portions of the files of Georgi Dimitrov and Osip Pjatnickij within the Comintern archive (fond 495), which apparently took place in the second half of 2007 (the new finding aids are dated November 2007). This declasification act however, making available vast materials on the international communist movement, has not been mentioned in the declassification bulletin.
Volume 9 (2008) lists slightly less declassified materials than in the year before. The majority of the declassified files concern CPSU politics in the post-war period, including the files of the Department of International Information of the CC of the CPSU (located at RGASPI). A substantial amount of files has been declassified at the Russian State Military Archive, mostly concerning the Soviet military apparatus in the 1920s, but also including documents on the Spanish Civil War (fond 35082).

Nikolaj Bucharin and Michail Boguslavskij – New Archival Fonds (Central Moscow Archive).
The Personal Collections Department of the Central Moscow Archive (TsMAMLS) now hosts the files of Nikolaj Bucharin's family. The materials have been given to the archive by relatives of Bucharin and his widow Anna Larina, as well as relatives of his brother, Vladimir Bucharin. Some materials have also been given by Valerij Pisigin, a prominent bukharinist in the late 1980s. Exact information about the content of the collection was not available yet. A Bucharin exhibition hosted by the archive in March 2008 showed manuscripts, photographs and drawings by Bucharin. To contact the archive, see the website at http://mosarchiv.mos.ru/.
Also amongst the new acquirements of the TsMAMLS is a collection of personal documents of Michail Boguslavskij, a Soviet party and trade union activist who took part in the Zinovievist opposition and was killed in 1937. The collection contains, amongst other items, documents on Boguslavskij's activities in Voronezh (1918-1919), letters he wrote to his children (1926), several photographic documents from the 1920s and the album "Workers' Moscow for the Third Congress of the Communist International" (1921). "Archivbericht Russland 2003-2005" veröffentlicht.
Die Zeitschrift "Der Archivar" veröffentlichte in der Ausgabe 2007/3 einen Bericht von Hermann Schreyer über die Situation der russischen Archive in den Jahren 2003 bis 2005.
Anhand von vor allem russischen Archivfachzeitschriften wird hier die Situation der russischen Archive für den deutschen Leser dargelegt. U.a. wird die Reform des Archivwesens im Jahre 2004 beleuchtet. Auch werden die wichtigsten Dokumentenveröffentlichungen für den Zeitraum in den Zeitschriften Otečestvennye Archivy und Istoričeskij Archiv vorgestellt und Meldungen zu neuen Beständen und sonstigen Änderungen in den einzelnen russischen Archiven zusammengefasst. Aspekte der internationalen Kooperation mit russischen Archiven werden ebenfalls berücksichtigt.

Bundism.net – A Network Devoted to Research on the Jewish Labor Bund.
The history of the General Jewish Labor Bund, once the international avantgarde of the Jewish workers' movement, can be understood as an integral part of East European history and labor history, but also as the history of a transnational movement. The last major international meeting of researchers on the Bund took place in 1997 in Poland. The exchange of ideas initiated by the conference’s participants cannot be considered closed.
There is currently no forum or space for intellectual exchange between researchers, and in many cases, scholars in the field remain isolated. Bundism.net (http://www.bundism.net), founded by three PhD-candidates from Germany and Australia, seeks to connect scholars throughout the world who are interested in exploring the history and ideas of the Jewish Labor Bund. It is committed to supporting a multiplicity of approaches and backgrounds.
Ultimately, the editors wish to create a transnational community where people can share their resources, wisdom and insight in order to enliven and enrich research. In order to achieve these aims, bundism.net offers the following:
• Information about ongoing projects.
• Direct contact to researchers worldwide.
• Information, including contact details, about relevant institutions (such as archives and libraries).
• A mailing-list and a discussion group.
• An extensive up-to-date bibliography.

Projekt "Clio-online Findmittelkatalog" abgeschlossen.
Der Clio-online Findmittelkatalog (http://findmittel.clio-online.de) bietet Zugriff auf 1.485 online verfügbare oder gedruckte Findbücher und Bestandsübersichten deutscher Staats-, Landes- und Regionalarchive sowie ausgewählter ausländischer Archive. Das Bundesarchiv, die Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin und das Institut für Geschichtswissenschaften an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin haben dieses Teilprojekt nach einer jeweils einjährigen Konzeptions- und Aufbauphase abgeschlossen. Die Daten wurden sukzessive nach epochalen und regionalen Kriterien geordnet auf dem Clio-online Portal zur Verfügung gestellt. Neben dem Verweis auf die Online-Version der Findmittel geben die Nachweise Auskunft über Provenienz und Umfang der im Findmittel verzeichneten Bestände, wie auch vorhandene Bestandsbeschreibungen. Für gedruckte Findmittel kann eine weiterführende Suche in Bibliothekskatalogen im Rahmen der Clio-online Metasuche durchgeführt werden.

Communist Party of Great Britain Online Bibliography Launched.
With the support of The Barry Amiel and Norman Melburn trust, a bibliography of the Communist Party of Great Britain (CPGB) compiled by Dave Cope is now available online.
Cope reports that the bibliography is: “divided into material by and about the Communist Party of Great Britain. While such a bibliography could never be complete, I am confident I have unearthed at least 95% of material published nationally by the CPGB, most local material and the vast majority of key books and many of the articles written about the CPGB.
I have tried to see all the items listed – only very occasionally have I failed with Party publications. I have a further list of books and articles I am in the process of researching that will eventually be listed.” The bibliography can be browsed by index entry or searched by keyword, and can be accessed at

Tamiment Library Communist Party of the United States Exhibition Online.
The Tamiment Library (New York, NY), which acquired substantial parts of the Archive of the Communist Party of the USA in 2006, held an exhibition about the CPUSA, curated by Peter M. Filardo and Michael Nash, from March until July 2007. Photographical reproductions of the items on display, ranging from written documents over photographs to Communist merchandise articles, can be browsed online at

Fonds Thorez-Vermeersch, Archives communales d’Ivry-sur-Seine: Finding Aids Online.
In 2002, descendants of the French communist leader Maurice Thorez and his wife Jeannette Vermeersch donated the couple's library and gift collection to the communal archives of Ivry-sur-Seine (France). Since 2006, the finding aids to the fonds are accessible online at http://www.fonds-thorez.ivry94.fr. Besides the aforementioned items, the fonds also contain film material.
Bestandsverzeichnis des Trotzkismus-Archivs der Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, Bonn-Bad Godesberg.
Die 1980 von Hermann Weber an der Universität Mannheim begründete und 2004 an die Bibliothek der Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (Bonn-Bad Godesberg) übergebene Spezialsammlung umfaßt zahlreiche Zeitschriften und Druckerzeugnisse trotzkistischer Gruppen vor allem im Nachkriegsdeutschland, sowie einen umfangreichen Bestand an Literatur über Leo Trotzki und den Trotzkismus, inclusive antitrotzkistischer Polemiken. 2007 wurde ein ausführliches Bestandsverzeichnis der Sammlung herausgegeben.

Russisches Staatliches Militärarchiv, Moskau: Veröffentlichung über das Sonderarchiv.
Das Sonderarchiv des Russischen Staatlichen Militärarchivs ist das Thema der 2. Ausgabe des Bulletins des Deutschen Historischen Instituts Moskau (DHI). Das von Bernd Bonwetsch, Corinna Kuhr-Korolev und Matthias Uhl herausgegebene Periodikum enthält außer einem Vorwort der Herausgeber einen grundsätzlichen Beitrag zur Geschichte des Sonderarchivs Moskau von Sebastian Panwitz, der auch für die Bestandsübersicht unter www.sonderarchiv.de verantwortlich zeichnet. Weitere 10 Forschungsberichte von Stipendiaten des DHI Moskau beleuchten Bestände und eigene Erfahrungen mit der Arbeit im Archiv, zumeist im Rahmen von Spezialthemen der deutschen Geschichte.

Bayerische Staatsbibliothek München: Neue ukrainische Archivalien
Die Bayerische Staatsbibliothek konnte mit Unterstützung der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft ihre international hervorragende Sammlung von mikroverfilmten Archivmaterialien zur osteuropäischen Geschichte um die Verfilmung "German Occupation of Kiev in 1941-1943" (Verlag East View) aus dem Staatsarchiv des Gebiets Kiev ergänzen.
Mehr als 90.000 Seiten umfassen die Unterlagen der Stadtverwaltung Kiev während der deutschen Besatzungszeit von 1941 bis 1943. Darunter finden sich u.a. Dokumente zum
Gesundheitswesen, zur Kultur und Erziehung, Wohnungssituation sowie zur Industrie. Der Bestand bietet zudem Materialien zur Zwangsrekrutierung von Arbeitskräften für das Deutsche Reich und ergänzt so die bereits in der Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek vorhandenen Überlieferungen ukrainischer Zwangsarbeiter. Die neu erworbene Mikrofilmsammlung bereichert die vielfältigen Bestände der Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek zur Geschichte der Ukraine insgesamt sowie die bereits vorhandenen mikroverfilmten Archivalien, beispielsweise die Unterlagen über die jüdische Emigration in der ersten Hälfte des 20.
Jahrhunderts oder die Akten der Kommunistischen Partei der Ukraine zur grossen Hungersnot Anfang der 1930er Jahre („Holodomor“).
Alle einschlägigen Mikrofilmsammlungen der Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek können vor Ort im Ostlesesaal (www.bsb-muenchen.de/Ostlesesaal.200.0.html), wo ein moderner Viewer- Scanner zur Verfügung steht, oder über die Bibliotheksfernleihe genutzt werden.
