Ambiguous Messages
Text & Ausstellung:
Kurt Würml¡, PhD, Curator and Director, Poster Collection, Basel School of Design
Dr. lnvar-Torre Hollaus, Docent, lnstitute for Visual Communication, HGK FHNW
Introduction
Following the exhibit Instrumentalization and
Resistance (lnstrumentalisation und Widerstand) last April, Ambiguous Messages represents the
second in a loose sequence of exhibitions jointly presented by the lnstitute of Visual Communication HGK/FHNW with the Poster Gollection, Basel School of Design (SfG), to bridge its closure during the move from the Baselcity center to the former transit depot in the new Dreispitz arts district.
ln recent years, the SfG Poster Collection has gen- erously opened its gates to classes of our BA- and MA-programs. This sequence of exhibitions will keep at least select parts of the enormous
collection accessible during its transition to the new spaces. Completion of the move is expected in February or March of 2O18, at which time we will be delighted to welcome our palñ-er to our immedia- te neighborhood.
Whereas the April exhibition concentrated on posters from the past two decades of (sub)cultural contexts, Ambiguous Messages focuses on historical posters of two subiects with a long tradition in the history of Swiss poster design: tourism and fed- eral campaigns (No.21, Mehr Freiheit is the
single exception). All but the aforementioned poster have been publicly displayed, although the one by Armin Hofmann (No.36, Schweiz - Kleines Land
grosse Landschaft) was reiected, and one poster by Viktor Rutz (No.4, herrliches Arosa) was at least partially banned). The sheer volume and diversity of visual material on the two topics is immense.
Therefore, the exhibition has been limited to the time range from the 1930s to the 1970s, with a few more recent examples included for the sake of com- parison. The poster designs of this five-decade period
ref lect Switzerland's prosperous economic Arourth and its socio-politically safe and comfortable situation in the heart of Europe, virtually rendering the catas- trophe of World War ll and the political pressure of the subsequent Cold War period almost invisible.
At first glance, the theme of ambiguity may seem surprising in an exhibition of travel posters and federal campaigns. However ambiguous etfects are quite common to both commercialadvertising and political campaigns, whether accidental or intended by the commissioner andlor graphic designer.
The intent of this exhibition is to select a few iconic
visualtopics from Swiss travel poster design,
such as winter sports, classic alpine destinations, and Switzerland as a European tourist hot spot, and juxtapose them with now outdated campaign posters from the Swiss army, charities, and more con-
temporary examples dealing with youth issues and women's rights, in order to provoke a broader comparison, and to consider their visual readability.
The posters on women's rights can also be regarded as thematically interlocking triggers be- tween the two exhibitions, lnstrumentalization and Resistance and Ambiguous Messages.
The exhibited posters represent far less than a com- prehensive overview bul this modest sampling may shed revealing light on zeitgeist phenomena and stereotypes in design, and perhaps also on the public expectation regarding expressions of social climate, aspects of gender/sexuality and political attitudes. Some pieces may seem more ambiguous or irritating now than they meant to be in their own time. Today quite a few of the shown posters appear anachronistic if not downright hilari- ous, reactions certainly not evoked within their original context. For purposes of this exhibition the selected posters are intentionally shown in a
new context, and 'staged' in a manner to enhance the original stereotypes and ambiguous effects. The 'forced'dialogue between the posters might also help
answer the question, whether provocative and offensive design is better design simply because it causes a reaction in the onlooker, or whether subtler creative and artistic interventions have a more lasting effect.
A retrospective view may also help reveal how such visual stereotypes and conventions work intel- lectually and how we can perceive them in a
more discerning and critical way than we view con' temporary images, from which we do not have this obiective distance. Time is the best iudge, and ultimately proves whether an image works only in its own time or if its visual and inventive power is of a more enduring character, capturing the onlooker even today. Fifty years hence, critics may react similarly to posters from the first decades of the
21 st century.
