The Sarosh K. R. Cama Prize ot Rs. 300/— for the year 1935
The Executive Committee of the K. R. Cama Oriental Institute
invites an essay on "Domestic Life in Ancient Iran from a sociological standpoint", for a prize of Rs. 300/—. Any lady or gentleman belonging to any nationality can compete tor the prize.
Intending competitors are expected to give a factual description of the old Iranian household, home life, family constitution, family rela¬
tions, etc., comparing the domestic aspect of the life of the ancient Ira- rian Society, as-can be gleaned from ancient Iranian literature either in the original Avesta-Pahlavi or in good translations thereof, or from contemporaneous literature of other nations referring to the Iranians.
The description must be to the point as far as possible so that the essay may not become needlessly lengthy.
The Essay, with only the nom-de-plume of the writer on the front page, must be submitted to the undersigned on or before the 23rd June, 1935. The full name and address of the writer must be sent in a separate
sealed cover bearing only the nom-de-plume on the outside.

Byzantinisches Epos und arabischer Ritterroman

Max Büdinger ist der erste gewesen, der vom byzan¬
tinischen Epos überhaupt geredet hat, und zwar schon vor
der Zeit, in der das sogenannte Epos wirklich aufgefunden
wurde. Seine Ausführungen waren ebenso prophetisch wie
verfehlt. Scharfsinnig hat er den historischen Charakter, die
mittelalterliche Herkunft des Liedes vom Sohne des An-
dronikos erkannt und es als ein Einzellied aus einem um¬
fangreichen epischen Zyklus angesprochen. Verfehlt aber
war die Identifizierung des Helden mit dem berüchtigten
Komnenen-Kaiser Andronikos. Und dieser Irrtum war in¬
sofern verhängnisvoll, als er ein bedeutendes episches Lied,
das heute noch als eine Perle der byzantinischen Volkspoesie
gelten mag, in eine viel zu späte Zeit versetzte. Nicht aus dem
12., sondern aus dem 9. und 10. Jahrhundert stammt das
eigentliche byzantinische Epos.
Das byzantinische Epos von Digenis Akritas ist als Pro¬
dukt des 10. Jahrhunderts jetzt allgemein anerkannt, ob¬
schon noch in der letzten Zeit Historiker wie Iorga und
Philologen wie der Grieche Chatzis von dem vermeintlichen
Einfluß der Kreuzzüge auf das byzantinische Epos fabeln
oder sich abquälen, die Autorschaft des Ur-Digenis einem
ziemlich nebelhaften Eustathios Makrembolitis aus dem
12. Jahrhundert zuzuweisen. Wie wir bald sehen werden, ist
dieser chronologische Ansatz völlig haltlos und phantastisch,
und es muß betont werden, daß in dieser chronologischen
Frage die Forschung trotz mancher Fehlgriffe von vornherein
das Richtige gesehen und getroffen hatte.
