Introduction

This Working Paper is intended as the first snapshot of a growing list of literature and materials accumulated at Laxenburg relevant to the study of national urban settlement systems and urban growth policies in advanced countries.

Any such list is incomplete and fragmentary. We have deleted a number of confidential government papers made available through the courtesy of policy planners in three countries, but aside from that, the bibliography lists most of the materials available to us in-house as of 1 September, 1974. Users will note many gaps, and we beg the courtesy of references, reprints, and copies of original documents which will add to the base of materials here. It is to be

particularly regretted that our present coverage of non- English sources, especially from the Socialist countries and Japan, is woefully inadequate.

It is intended that a second version of this paper, with a topical index, can be prepared as a IIASA Research Memor- andum in time for the conference on national settlement

systems, 16-19 December 1974. Comments and additions will be gratefully received.
