Note on the Ändhra king Candasäta. — The history

of the Ändhras has been discussed by Mr. Vincent Smitb in this

Journal for 1902 and 1903 and later on in his Early History of

India'' pages 194 seq. The last but one of the kings of the

dynasty is here given as Candra in accordance with the Visnu 5

Purana, and in his History (p. 202) the author remarks tbat "the

real existence of Candra Sri is attested by the discovery of a few

leaden coins bearing his name", referring the reader to bis Gata-

logue of the Coins in the Indian Museum, Calcutta (Oxford 1906,

p. 209). The coins here referred to are very well known. Mr. lo

E. Thomas {Indian Antiquary IX, 64) describes three copies, and

gives the legends as \rd]no Vasitho{fhi)putasa siri-Carndasatasa,

[raino siri-Camda, and rano siri-Carndasatasa, respectively. Sir

A. Cunningham {Coins of Ancient India, London 1891, p. 110,

PL XI, 13. 14) bas two copies. He reads the legends räjna Vasi- IB

ihiputasa siri- Vadasatasa and räjfia siri- Vadasa[tasa'\, respectively.

The Indian Museum in Calcutta possesses only one example which

Mr. Smith (1. c.) reads *ar[i] Gadasäta[kani'\. At the same time

he informs us that Professor Rapson in his unpublished British

Museum Catalogue of Ändhra coins points out that Cada and not 20

Vada is the proper form of the name. That this is so, is, I think,

evident from the published facsimiles. In Mr. Smith's Catalogue,

it is true , the reproduction of tbe Cada coin has been forgotten

in the plate. But the legends on the two coins illustrated by

Cunningham are clearly rafto V[ä\s[{'\fh[i\putasa s[i'\r[i'\-Cada- 25

satasa and [rd\iu) sir[i]-Cada respectively. As far as can

be made out from the coins, the proper form of the name of this

king is accordingly Cadasäta, and I am unable to see why Mr. Smith

prefers the form Candra. The forms of the name given in the

Puränas are not at all in favour of this supposition. Candra, it so

is true, occurs in the Visnu and Bhägavata Puräna, but the Matsya

has Canda and the Vayu Danda'), and this last form cannot well

be explained as a corruption of Candra. I, therefore, think that

Canda is the correct form of the word. Canda was of course a

Sätakarni, but tbis fact does not justify ns to make tbe Cadasäta

of tbe coins stand for Cada Sätakani, tbougb it might be urged

that consideration of space would make such an abbreviation quite

natural. I am, however, able to quote an instance where the form

6 Cadasäta bas been used, though no such consideration existed. I

am indebted to Mr. A. Rea, to whose zeal and acumen we owe so

many important arcbaeological discoveries, for this information.

At Kodavolu near Chandurti in the Pittapur taluk , Kolanka

Estate , Godavari District , Mr. Rea found on a hill called dänam

10 dibba or "mount of wealth" some structural remains which he

thinks are a Buddhist stiipa and perhaps other buildings. Close

to the mount were three rectangular wells cut in the solid rock.

They were filled with earth to within a few feet from the surface.

The local tradition is that these wells were used for storing water

15 or grain. On the inner side of one of them is an inscription in

Brähmi characters. The estampages and photographs I have seen

do not make it possible to read the whole with certainty, but

everything of importance can be made out.

The inscription covers a space 21" X 18", and the height of 20 the individual letters is l^/a" —4" (a). The alpbabet is of the

same character as in the Näsik inscriptions, and may be assigned

to the end of the second or the beginning of the third century A. D.

The language is Prakrit. The palatal ä occurs in 1. 5. The in¬

scription is distributed over six lines and it runs, —

25 1. sidham rario Vasithi-

2. putasa sämi-siri- 3. Cadasätasa [savacha^re

4. 10 3(?) he pa 3 diva [dasame^

5. amacasa [bhii\miveäo [dhamenal

80 6. thäpito.

Success. In the 13th(?) year of the king svämin ^J-Cada-

säta, the son of Vasithi, in the third fortnight of winter, on

the tenth(?) day, the earth-dwelling of the minister was rightly

established.

85 The term bhümiveäa is not known from other sources. 1 have

asked Mr. Rea if the wells found by him can be graves, and be

thinks that quite possible. It is however better to suspend judgment till the site has been excavated.

The inscription here mentioned has been found in the Goda-

40 vari District, and as far as I know, all the coins of Cadasäta have

been discovered in the same neighbourhood. It, therefore, seems

necessary to infer that he belonged to the eastern branch , and

we have no indication tbat he ever ruled in the western Ändhra

sten Konow.

Voraussetzungen wenigstens unwahrscheinlich. 25

Siddharsi bat also wohl jene Sütra-ähnlichen Sätze selbst ge¬

6. Jahrhundert zurück. Hermann Jacobi.

munja, in vediscben Texten mehrfach nebeneinander erscheinen,

verleihen. Ich führe an:

Gobhila II, 10, 37 trih pradaksinam munjamekhalämpariharan.

Kätyäyana Sraut. II , 7, 1 m ufij a yoktrena trivrtä pariharati.

Vgl.

bedeutet.

A. durch

stehenden Kampf ihm Sieg bringen soll". jj Qldenberg
