The project VISUAL CONTAGIONS (dir. Béatrice Joyeux-Prunel) funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, and the Chair for Digital Humanities at the University of Geneva, is recruiting one postdoc in digital humanities/ digital art history and/or artificial vision, and two PhD students in digital humanities / digital art history. The fellowships are to be filled respectively for 2 years (or 3 years part-time) and 4 years. These posts are to be filled from 1 January 2021 (with a possible later start). At least a written and oral comprehension of French is required.
VISUAL CONTAGIONS studies the global circulation of images in the print age over a century, from the 1890s to the advent of the Internet. It describes and analyses how some images circulated more than others - in reproductions, copies, pastiches, imitations -, through which channels and in what chronology they were disseminated. The ambition is to understand what makes an image successful, but also to identify how the circulation of images has contributed to the globalization of cultures, and whether or not it reveals the symbolic domination of certain countries and cultures over others, depending on the period.
The major part of the project concerns visual studies and art history, on 3 main subjects:
worldwide circulation of styles, global diversity or convergence of representations of women, international diffusion of a visual grammar of political resistance. The project also intersects with social, economic and cognitive questions on the circulation of images. Finally, VISUAL CONTAGIONS involves an experimental collaboration with contemporary artists interested in visual globalization, in artificial vision techniques, and how another world history of art can be written.

national suisse de la recherche scientifique, la Chaire des Humanités numériques de l'Université de Genève recrute un-e post-doctorant-e en humanités numériques et/ou en vision artificielle, et deux doctorant-e-s en humanités numériques. Les bourses sont à pourvoir respectivement pour 2 ans (ou 3 ans à temps partiel) et 4 ans. Ces postes seront pourvus à partir du 1er janvier 2021 (démarrage ultérieur possible).
VISUAL CONTAGIONS étudie la circulation mondiale des images à l'ère de l'imprimé sur un siècle, des années 1890 à l'avènement d'Internet. Il décrit et analyse comment certaines images ont circulé plus que d'autres - en reproductions, copies, pastiches, imitations -, par quels canaux et dans quelle chronologie elles ont été diffusées. L'ambition est de comprendre ce qui fait le succès d'une image, mais aussi d'identifier comment la circulation des images a contribué à la mondialisation des cultures, et si elle révèle ou non la domination symbolique de certains pays et cultures sur d'autres, selon les périodes.
La plus grosse partie du projet relève des études visuelles et de l'histoire de l'art, sur 3 sujets principaux : circulation mondiale des styles, diversité ou convergence mondiale des représentations de la femme, diffusion internationale d'une grammaire visuelle de la résistance politique. Le projet recoupe également des questionnements sociaux, économiques et cognitifs sur la circulation des images. VISUAL CONTAGIONS implique enfin une collaboration expérimentale avec des artistes contemporains intéressés par la mondialisation visuelle, les techniques de vision artificielle, et la manière dont une autre histoire mondiale de l'art peut être écrite.
