Biogeochemical processes at Calyptogena colonies in the Japan Deep Sea Trench: evi-dence for a self-sustaining ecosystem

Abstract

Calyptogena species are typical members of cold seep communities associated with tectonic faults where active venting of fluids and gases takes place which are used by their endosym-biotic sulfide oxidizing bacteria as an energy source. We investigated several clam patches of Calyptogena sp. colonies at a Japan Trench mid-slope terrace at great water depth (5360 m) with the expectation of active seepage of methane and sulfide associated with high sulfate reduction (SR) rates in the sediments. To understand the main biogeochemical processes that define the locally restricted clam colonies, we applied an integrated approach of biogeochem-ical and molecular techniques. Porewater constituents and sulfate and methane turnover was measured at the center and the rim of clam colonies, while 16S rDNA and intact membrane lipid analysis gave insight into the microbial community composition. In the center of the clam field (Fig. VII-5), low SR rates were restricted to the upper (17 cm) sediment horizon and were closely coupled to the anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM). I am really thankful to Kai-Uwe Hinrichs for giving me the opportunity to conduct research in the exciting field of Organic Geochemistry. Kai and his group-members greatly introduced me into the world of this highly multidisciplinary field in which I thrived through the world of earth history, biogeochemistry, geomicrobiology and petroleum geology.
